A pair of Little 4 teams faced off in the championship game at the Trinity Wolves Holiday Classic on Saturday, giving local fans an early preview of what to expect when league play gets under way in the new year.

And round one of this rivalry went to the Hoopa Warriors, who defeated Ferndale 64-37.

Also in action on Saturday, the McKinleyville girls won their tournament finale at the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament at Healdsburg, beating Ukiah 42-33.

In the same tournament, the Fortuna girls lost to Healdsburg  63-40.

In other tournament action, the Eureka girls continued their impressive start to the new season with a 55-22 win over Sonoma Valley in the Maria Carrillo tournament final.

The tournament championship was the second straight for the Loggers, who also won the Gridley tournament last week and are now 8-1.

Two other local teams played each other for the Mt. Shasta tournament championship, with Del Norte handing the St. Bernard’s girls their first loss of the season, 50-46.

The South Fork girls were also in action and rallied from a 20-point halftime deficit to beat Anderson Valley 47-38 at the Potter valley tournament.

The Arcata Tigers were also in action in the REIBT championship game, where they barely fell to Justin-Siena by a score of 61-59 on Saturday night. We’ll have more details of that game in the coming days..

Allie Cox led the way offensively for Fortuna against Healdsburg and was named to the all-tournament team.

The impressive Cox finished with a team-high 11 points.

Teammates Jorlynn Villalvazo and Emily Sauers each scored seven points.

“The team came out flat and could not gain any momentum,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “Healdsburg shot the ball well and forced a number of turnovers.”

Fortuna dropped to 6-3.

Next up, the Huskies will play at the Orland tournament, which tips off on Thursday.

The McKinleyville Panthers, meanwhile, won for the second straight night.

Tatum Fisher scored a team-high 13 points in the win including seven in the third quarter, and was named to the all-tournament team.
