By Ray Hamill — North Coast football fans who tuned into ESPN on Wednesday night were pleasantly surprised to see College of the Redwoods football featured on SportsCenter.
On Saturday, CR traveled to the Bay Area to play San Jose City College in the team’s season opener and won the game comfortably 41-21.
The host Jaguars stole the headlines, however, when 47-year-old Justin Buzzard took the field late in the game.
Buzzard, a defensive end who was on the field for two plays, was interviewed during the show’s SC Spotlight segment, along with some brief highlights from the game.
He had words of praise for the CR players and coaches.
After being asked about some trash talking during the game, the father of three responded: “Well, first I want to say, we played College of the Redwoods and they were incredible. Those guys, they were so great, they were so honoring, their coaching staff, their guys.”
He added with a smile, however, that there was some trash talking from one of the CR linemen, although he didn’t specify what was said.
“But I’m good at trash talk too and so I gave some back, and that’s part of what makes football a lot of fun,” he added, smiling again.
Redwoods will play Reedley at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday.
