After an impressive season opener at San Jose last week, the College of the Redwoods football team is back on the North Coast this weekend to host Reedley College in its home opener.
Both teams enjoyed winning starts to the new campaign and are 1-0 as they get set for the afternoon showdown.
But both are coming off very different wins, which adds an air of intrigue to the week-two game.
CR came flying out of the starting gates and put up 38 points in the first half at San Jose, with a big-play offense that the Jaguars had no answer for.
They ended the game as a contest before halftime, and a 41-21 final score was flattering for the Jaguars, who scored a couple of late TDs.
Reedley, meanwhile, enjoyed a very different win, getting the better of De Anza 9-6 in a low-scoring season opener.
So what can we expect this week?
CR head coach Jason White and his players will be hoping for another fast start against a Reedley defense held De Anza scoreless until the final quarter.
Several players stood out for CR in the opener, including an offense that quickly set the tone and will be hoping to do so again on Saturday.
An experienced CR offensive line was expected to be a strength for the team this year and lived up to that billing in last weekend’s game, while quarterback Kasen Covert was outstanding in his first start, completing 12-of-17 passes for 287 yards, two TDs and an interception.
Covert also ran for 108 yards on 11 carries and scored another TD.
Receiver Tre Silva was equally impressive and averaged 47.7 yards a reception on three catches — two of which went for touchdowns — and he finished with 143 yards receiving.
That explosive big-play CR offense looks like it could be in for a big season.
We’ll know more about that after Saturday’s game against a stingy Reedley defense, but it should be an intriguing matchup, one way or the other.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Redwood Bowl.
