BOYS BASKETBALL — Warriors win again; Crusaders suffer first loss

File photo – The Hoopa boys won for the second straight day on Saturday.

It was another busy day for the H-DNL teams on Saturday, with seven of the nine varsity teams in action.

The Arcata Tigers lost in the final of the 55th Annual Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament, falling 48-41 to Montgomery.

Also at the Arcata tournament, Fortuna beat a Big 5 rival for the second straight day, getting the better of McKinleyville 64-51, while Eureka closed out tournament play with a 65-41 win over Red Bluff.

At the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament in Healdsburg, South Fork lost to Ukiah 66-50, while the Hoopa Warriors got their second win in two days, beating Tulelake 46-40.

The St. Bernard’s boys were also in action at the Mt. Shasta tournament, losing for the first time this season in a championship showdown.

The Crusaders fell 67-64 to Weed and dropped to 5-1.

Seniors Seth Dyer and Aaiden Burris were both named to the all-tournament team for St. Bernard’s, which overcame a sluggish start to make a game of it in the second half.

“We didn’t play that good in the first half, but we made some good adjustments in the second half and battled back,” St. Bernard’s head coach Issac Gildea said.

The Crusaders trailed by eight after the opening quarter but took control of the game with a big third quarter that saw them outscore their opponents 32-15 for the period and they carried a 10-point lead into the fourth.

However, the Cougars rallied themselves late in the game and outscored SB 24-11 in the final period to sneak the comeback victory.

Afterwards Gildea took the blame for the loss.

“I’ve got to do a better job coaching,” he said. “My team did a great job tonight. I’ve just got to do a better job coaching.”

Despite the loss, there were several bright spots for the Crusaders.

Burris finished with a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds, while Dyer had 16 points and six boards.

His younger brother Liam Dyer also had a good game and added 12 points, while Wyatt Simoni chipped in six points.

Versatile junior Adam Wagner also impressed his coach off the bench with his unselfish play.

“He’s just playing great for us,” Gildea said of Wagner. “He brings positive energy and he’s playing strong for us.”

The South Fork boys, meanwhile, faced a big early-season challenge against the Division-2  Ukiah Wildcats.

“A lot of mental mistakes put us down early,” head coach Taylor Morrow said. “I think the fact we played such a large school had us not in the right mind state.”

The D-6 Cubs were led by senior standout Tommy Rotbergs, who finished with 19 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

The Cubs shot the ball well from downtown and hit eight 3-pointers.

The loss was the second straight for the Cubs, who dropped to 6-2, while the Wildcats improved to 7-2.

Next up, South Fork will host their annual Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament next weekend.

The Hoopa Warriors fared better in their matchup against Tulelake.

The Warriors led 24-15 at halftime and made it count, holding on down the stretch and improving to 2-5.

Brandon Romero scored a team-high 16 points in the win, while Lyle McKinnon added 15 points and both Carlos Anzora and Sequoia Valentine each finished with six points.
