The Fortuna and Eureka boys basketball teams both won on Saturday to close out the 55th Annual Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The Huskies beat McKinleyville 64-51 in the consolation game, while the Loggers beat Red Bluff 65-41 in the seventh-place game.

Alfonso Medina capped three big days in tournament play with an all-tournament selection for the Fortuna boys, who went 2-1 in tournament play and are now 4-3 overall.

Saturday’s win was the second over a Big 5 rival in two days for the Huskies, who also defeated Eureka in overtime on Friday.

Medina finished with a double-double against the Panthers, scoring a game-high 17 points and dishing out 10 assists.

Fellow senior Russell Pascascio also continued to impress in the win and had 16 points.

Kallen Barrote also had eight points and five rebounds, while Owen Wallen and Jace Barsanti each chipped in five points.

The Huskies outscored the Panthers in all four quarters, taking an eight point lead into halftime.

Nick Maher scored a team-high 16 points for McKinleyville, which closed out tournament play 1-2 and dropped to 6-4 on the season.

Senior Jordan Brown had 15 points in the loss.

The Loggers, meanwhile, won with some great defense with several players contributing.

“We were really happy with the defensive intensity, from one through 13 everyone brought defensive intensity from the start of the game to the final buzzer,” Eureka assistant coach Andrew DeHart said.

It was a tight game for the opening half, with the Loggers leading by just five points at the interval, but they began to pull away in the second half and stretched the lead to as many as 27 at one point.

Jahmil Rippy continued to impress and finished with a team-high 18 points in the win, while sophomore Prince Latimer added 13 points.

Elijah Estrada also had a good game and scored nine points, with Makai Dennon chipping in five points.

Dennon impressed off the bench, along with Michael Jewell and Jerome Lyons as the Loggers showcased their depth in the fourth quarter.

Junior point guard Will Mooney also had a big game and led the way defensively.

“He was pressuring the ball, forcing turnovers and making things happen,” DeHart said of Mooney.

Next up, the Loggers will host their own tournament in the new Jay Willard Gymnasium, which tips off on Thursday.

Eureka plays Upper Lake on opening night.

Alfonso Medina was named to the all-tournament team for Fortuna.
