By Ray Hamill — This time around there would be no slow start to the new season for the Fortuna Huskies.
One year after dropping their first three games, a more experienced and determined Fortuna team opened the new campaign in impressive fashion, cruising to a 41-6 win over St. Helena at Husky Field.
“You know what, we started exactly how we wanted,” Fortuna head coach Mike Benbow said. “I think our offensive and defensive lines were spectacular tonight.”
Fortuna was one of four H-DNL teams in action on Friday night, although it wasn’t smooth sailing for two of them.
The Del Norte Warriors made the long trip to play Oakland High School and lost 34-20.
According to head coach Nick White, the Warriors made too many mistakes that ultimately proved costly in a game that got away from them early in the second half.
“I thought we made a lot of mistakes that kind of compounded throughout the game,” White said. “But we also did some really good things.”
The Ferndale Wildcats and Hoopa Warriors also played on Friday night.
The Cats traveled to Anderson High School and came away with a 31-7 win, their 14th straight in regular-season action.
The Hoopa Warriors, meanwhile, kicked off their season at Trinity and fell 42-16.
