Sophomore Mia Hoogendoorn appears ready for a big winter on the local college basketball courts.
The College of the Redwoods sophomore has hit the ground running this season with strong performances in her first two games of the new season.
On Wednesday, the Middletown High graduate scored a team-high 22 points to lead the Redwoods women to a 49-39 win at Los Medanos.
The dominating game followed a double-double performance in the season opener against Lemoore on Friday, in a game CR lost 56-53.
Hoogendoorn finished that game with 16 rebounds and 10 points.
But she was far from the only standout for CR on Wednesday.
Alexa Ferrerya added nine points in the win, while Aliyah Vigil and Kinley Somerville each had six points and Cayenne Pruter chipped in four points.
With just seven players available for the game, the CR women overcame a slow start and grew into the game.
“I thought we fought the entire game,” CR head coach Bree Northern said. “It got off to a bit of a slow start, but we continued to fly around on defense and get steals, which helped fuel our offense.”
All seven players contributed .
“It was a complete team win,” Northern added. “Everyone had great effort. We shared the ball and played together and took care of business on the road.”
Former Ferndale Wildcat Madison Gossi got her college career off to an impressive start against Lemoore and scored a team-high 11 points in the loss, while former Arcata Tiger Addison Wingate added 11 boards to go with eight points.
Northern and her players will continue early-season action with three games next week.
They will play at Merritt on Thursday before taking on Pasadena City and Santa Ana at the College of San Mateo Crossover on Friday and Saturday.
The Redwoods men opened their season with an 81-64 loss to Cabrillo on Friday.
Ty Dahlin scored a team-high 27 points and had 10 rebounds in the loss, while teammate Maximus Swanson also had a double-double, finishing with 15 points and 12 boards.
The CR men will be back in action at Napa Valley on Friday, with tip off set for 7 p.m.
