The Six River Youth Football Conference is gearing up for a big weekend, with three championship games and a cheerleading competition taking place.

A busy two days gets under way on Saturday at Eureka High School, with the cheerleading competition.

The event will be held at Jay Willard Gymnasium, with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. and the performances beginning at 10.

The focus will then turn to the football teams with the three championship games taking place on Sunday at Hoopa High School.

It’s been another fun season for the local youth teams and an exciting few weeks of playoffs, with just one of the three tops seeds still in contention.

A busy day gets under way with the Single-A championship game at 9:30 a.m., followed by the AA final at noon and the AAA decider at 2:30 p.m.

In Single-A, No. 2 seed Northern Knights take on No 4 Del Norte North.

The Knights got the better of Del Norte South in their semifinal last week, winning 19-0.

They tied top-seeded McKinleyville for the best record in the regular season after both teams went 6-1.

But McKinleyville would lose its semifinal to Del Norte North, 7-0 in a low-scoring game.

Del Norte also defeated Hoopa 27-0 in the opening round of the playoffs, giving the team defense back-to-back shutouts to begin the playoffs.

The Del Norte defense also posted shutouts in five of its seven regular-season games, and has given up just 20 points all season.

The Northern Knights will also compete in the AA championship game in matchup of the top two seeds.

The No. 1 Knights defeated Del Norte North 41-7 in las weekends semifinals and is a perfect 8-0 on the year.

The Knights will try to complete a perfect season when they take on No. 2 Eel River Valley in Sunday’s final.

Eel River got the better of Ferndale 12-0 in last weekend’s semifinal and is 6-2 on the year.

In the AAA final, No. 2 McKinleyville will take on No. 5 Del Norte North.

McKinleyville defeated Ferndale 36-14 in the semifinals, improving to 7-1, while Del Norte has posted back-to-back playoff wins over Eel River Valley (20-13) and the top-seeded Northern Knights (24-14) on the way to the championship showdown.

It’s been an impressive playoff run for Del Norte, which won just three of seven regular-season games but has been playing its best football of the year at an opportune time.

McKinleyville beat Del Norte 32-6 earlier in the year.
