With a month still remaining in the regular season, the Hoopa Warriors baseball team is already guaranteed to have its most successful campaign in 14 years.
On Monday, the Warriors swept a doubleheader at Hayfork, taking the opener 11-4 and winning game two 9-6.
With the two wins, the Hoopa boys improved to 6-3 on the season, guaranteeing them more wins than in any season since they went 14-10 back in 2011, which was the last winning record for the program.
But anyone who has been following this year’s Warriors won’t be surprise to hear that considering how competitive they have been through the opening nine games.
“It was a great team effort in both games to secure two wins,” said head coach Aaron Williams, who is having an immediate impact with the program in his first year in charge.
The Warriors led throughout game one, scoring twice in the top of the first and stretching the advantage to nine going into the bottom of the sixth.
Brandon Romero and Allen Kane led the way.
Romero carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and got the win on the mound.
The standout senior threw 6.2 innings, giving up just two hits and four walks and striking out 11, while Kane led a 10-hit team performance at the plate.
The junior finished 4-for-4 and scored four runs, while hitting his team-leading seventh double of the spring.
Delmer Ferris stayed hot at the plate and was 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Lyle McKinnon was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Romero, Brian Richards and Joe Masten each also had a base hit in the win, with the latter also driving in a pair of runs.
McKinnon also impressed on defense, making his first career start at catcher.
According to Williams, the senior did “a great job behind the plate and he called a good game for Brandon.”
In game two, the Warriors broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the third and held on down the stretch despite a late run by the hosts.
Sophomore Joshua White got the start on the hill and recorded his first win of the season.
The young player threw 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and striking out four, with Kane taking over late and recording the save.
Romero and Kane each had two hits to lead a seven-hit team performance, while Keyton Gulley added a double and drove in three runs.
Ferris and McKinnon each also had a hit in the win, with the latter driving in a pair of runs.
The Warriors, who are now ranked No. 8 in the North Coast Section Division 5, according to MaxPreps, will return to conference play when they host Ferndale on Tuesday afternoon.
