Potent Ashland aerial attack too much for Warriors, who drop to 0-2

For the second straight weekend, the Del Norte Warriors matched their opponents stride for stride in the opening half before the game got away from them after that.

Playing in their home opener, the Warriors scored on their first two possessions of the night and led 14-12 late in the second quarter.

But a much-improved Ashland team held Del Norte scoreless the remainder of the night, scoring three unanswered touchdowns on the way to a 33-14 win.

With the loss, Del Norte dropped to 0-2 on the season.

The Warriors defense had no answer for Ashland quarterback Colton Hernandez.

The standout junior completed 17 of 27 passes for 339 yards, with junior receiver Cole Iwamoto pulling in nine catches for 216 yards.

The two teams combined to score touchdowns on the first five drives of the night.

The Grizzlies scored on their opening possession and led 6-0, before the Warriors came right back and opened their account on a three-yard Max Borges TD run.

An Adrian Alvarado PAT put them up 7-6.

But the visitors were just getting started and quickly retook the lead with a second TD on their second possession of the night, before the Warriors responded once again, adding to their tally on a 16-yard Borges TD run.

Alvarado’s second PAT of the game put the hosts up 14-12.

Similar to last week though, Del Norte would give up a score late in the opening half and never fully recovered.
