By Ray Hamill — The CR bats are coming alive just one week before conference play starts.

On Saturday, freshman infielder Maeghan Hampton finished a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate as the College of the Redwoods women got a much-needed boost by sweeping a doubleheader against Chabot College at the Bear River field.

The Corsairs racked up 25 base hits in the two games, taking the opener 9-5 and winning game two 11-4.

With the victories, the CR women improved to 3-13 on the season, as they get set to open the Golden Valley Conference with doublehdeaders at Siskiyous and Shasta next weekend.

Hampton, who graduated Eureka High last year, has had an immediate impact with her new team this spring and was on fire at the plate on Saturday.

The freshman finished 3-for-3 in each game, include a home run and a double in game one, and she also drove in three runs and scored five.

She also stole four bases.

Eight different CR players hit successfully the sweep, including the Bibancos-Knight twin sisters, Diamond and Jewely, who are also quickly adapting to the collegiate game.

Jewely finished 4-for-8 over the two games and had a double in each, while Diamond had three hits on the day, including a double in game two.

“I’m proud of our bats and base running today,” said head coach Megan Valente, whose team had three road games in two days on Thursday and Friday. “We had to play three games against two of the top teams in the state (West Valley and San Mateo) Thursday and Friday and come home and play two today.

“We were all exhausted, but I did not hear one person complain. They were in the game and ready to win.

“They hit the ball well, making adjustments to both of Chabot’s pitchers and taking the sweep.”

Former McKinleyville Panther Allie Egbert got the win in the circle in game two — her first of the season — and helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with three runs.

The experienced sophomore pitched all seven innings and allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out five.

“Allie was on a roll in the circle, throwing the hardest I’ve seen all season,” Valente added. “She stayed composed the whole game and pitched her game.”

The Corsairs led 4-1 early in game two, but the visitors narrowed the gap to just one with a pair of runs in the top of the third.

However, the Corsairs quickly pulled away again, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Kyla Cockerham also had two hits and scored two runs in game two, while Catlin Caughie rounded out a 12-hit team performance.

Earlier in the day, the Corsairs showcased their improvement and power at the plate with five of their 13 base hits going for extra bases.

Former Hoopa Warrior Nae-Rew Martin finished 3-for-3 with a triple, while Caughie was 2-for-4.

Pitcher Dania Nathalia-Chavez also had a double.

The game featured a lot of runs early and was tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the second inning.

But the home team would add two runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 9-5 lead and that was the end of the scoring.

Nathalia-Chavez threw all seven innings for the win, giving up just four hits and three walks and striking out eight.

It was her first collegiate win.

Diamond Bibancos-Knight also had a big day defensively at first base.

“Diamond has been a wall at first base, making the hardest plays look easy,” Valente said. “She has picked up her teammates and got us out of tough innings.”
