By Ray Hamill — After winning six straight games to close out the season, including Saturday’s historic championship victory, the South Fork Cubs are getting some notice well beyond the Redwood Curtain.
A 44-22 win over Stuart Hall in the eight-player North Coast Section Division-1 final sees the Cubs rise to No. 7 in California among eight-player teams, according to MaxPreps.
The NCS championship is the first ever for the school and the players have been busy enjoying the moment.
On Monday, head coach Karl Terrell and his four captains — Broc Contreras, Shevy Bero-Vanmeter, Justin Freitas and Wesley Way — visited the KMUD News studios for an interview.

And next week, the school plans on holding a rally to recognize the historic achievement.
The celebrations after Saturday’s win were hindered when power went out in the area in the closing minutes of the game.
That, however, won’t take from what was a memorable occasion for South Fork sports.
“It means a lot to the program, the community and the school, and hopefully the youth football (in the area) will keep this thing going and we can get back to 11-man football,” Terrell said. “That’s always the goal.”
Playing in muddy conditions, the Cubs won with a relentless and physical ground attack, wearing down their opponents as the game went on.
And several players contributed as South Fork gained 351 rushing yards on 59 carries.
Way led the way with 178 yards and two rushing TDs on 26 carries, while Freitas finished with 113 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.
Contreras also had 40 yards on just four carries, as well as a 27-yard TD reception from Bero-Vanmeter, who completed 2 of 6 passes for 51 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Freitas finished with a team-high nine tackles while Josey Paula had six tackles and Shevy and Boden Bero-Vanmeters each had five.
Boden Bero-Vanmeter also had the team’s two sacks, while Lucas Genolio had a fumble recovery.
