By Ray Hamill — The Ferndale Wildcats are the lowest seeded team to feature in a North Coast Section football championship game this season after knocking off No. 1 Clear Lake on the road in the Division-7 bracket semifinal over the weekend.
The No. 5 Wildcats will play No. 2 Willits in Friday night’s final at Ukiah High School, with kick off set for 7 p.m.
Of the nine other NCS championship games this season, six feature the top two seeds in the bracket and none feature a team seeded lower than No. 3.
And that includes the Division-5 championship between No. 2 St. Bernard’s and No. 1 Miramonte, which will be played on Saturday night, also at 7 p.m.
The Division-5 final will take place at Acalanes High School in Lafayette in the East Bay, which is less than five miles from Miramonte High in Orinda.
The road playoff game will be the first for the Crusaders, who played their opening two NCS games at home.
St. Bernard’s, which has outscored its last three opponents by a combined 131-7, is 9-3 on the season after a dominating 49-0 win over Analy in Saturday’s section semifinal, while Miramonte is 8-3.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, have already posted back-to-back road wins against higher seeds.
They knocked off No. 4 St. Helena 41-13 in their playoff opener and followed that with a 20-12 win at No. 1 Clear Lake on Friday night.
The Cats are now 8-4 on the season, while Willits is 9-3 after a 31-7 win over Kelseyville in the section semifinal.
