The home opener didn’t go exactly according to plan for College of the Redwoods football on Saturday, but the hosts got the win, and ultimately that’s the most important thing.
One week after an impressive and relatively clean performance in their season opener at San Jose, the CR players won a sloppy showdown against Reedley College at the Redwood Bowl, overcoming way too many penalties.
But they found a way to pull out a 31-23 victory and go to 2-0 on the season, holding on down the stretch and handing the Tigers their first loss of the year.
“You know, we played well for the most part,” head coach Jason White said. “But we had too many penalties. That’s what stopped most of our drives, and on defense that’s kind of what kept their drives alive.”
However, they did enough to get the win and keep their early-season momentum going.
Making his second start for the team, freshman quarterback Kasen Covert “made a lot of plays,” according to White, while the CR running backs did their part.
“Our running backs played really well,” the CR coach said. “They ran hard today. They did a really good job.”
The CR defense also came up with two key interceptions, a pick six on Reedley’s opening drive of the afternoon and a Chaz Scott Jr., interception late in the game to all but seal the victory.
“We got the win,” White said. “There were a lot of big plays in the game, I’ll say that. Our kids were physical. There were a lot of big hits in the game and that was fun to see, and the physicality of our running backs was a definite positive.”
No game stats or scoring details were immediately available.
