Del Norte’s Jerry Griffin had a breakout couple of days for the Northern Humboldt Giants this week, as the local American Legion club tied two road games.
The Giants opened the road trip with an 8-8 tie in 10 innings against the NorCal Aces on Tuesday and followed that with an 8-8 tie in nine innings against the Orland Outlaws the following day.
Griffin finished 5-for-11 over the two games and showcased why he could one of the more dangerous players for Del Norte next spring.
“Jerry Griffin is a pure hitter,” Giants head coach Brandon Coborn said of the high school sophomore. “He’s a true competitor. He has the prototypical smooth left-handed swing.”
The Hicks brothers also continued their impressive summer with the Giants, as did Emilio Medina.
Bowdy Hicks finished 5-for-9 with a double and three RBIs over the two games, while older brother Carson Hicks was 3-for-9.
Medina, who enjoyed a good spring playing for the Arcata Tigers, finished 4-for-10 and had four RBIs.
“Bowdy Hicks has been hitting in bunches lately, and it seems the better quality the pitching gets, the more he shows up,” Coborn said. “Carson Hicks is a fierce competitor, a gamer, and brings the energy for our ball club as our lead-off hitter.
“Medina finally broke out offensively, bringing a calm and confident presence to the box. He hit the ball hard this trip and is working to become amore complete player.”
Ben Shrewsberry got the start on the mound for game one and had his best outing of the summer, according to the coach.
The Del Norte standout threw from innings and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six.
“He had his best stuff, commanded the zone and held his composure through the entire start,” the Giants coach said. “He impressed a few college coaches in attendance.”

Arcata’s Gavin Anderson got the start for game two and also threw well.
Anderson also saw action in game two and threw 5.2 innings over the two days, giving up just one earned run on three hits and three walks and striking out five.
Rylan Kees also continued to impress on the mound and featured in relief in both games, giving up two earned runs on three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings and striking out six
“Overall it was a successful trip to the North Valley,” Coborn said. “We played quality, higher-level competition and competed for all 19 innings in the heat.”
Next up, the Giants will host their annual summer tournament at Arcata High this weekend opening against South Coast on Friday at 3 p.m.
The Giants are now 4-1-2.
