Teresa Catana continued her impressive start to the new soccer season on Thursday, as the Ferndale Wildcats posted a second straight lopsided win.
Competing in pool play of the Upper Lake Tournament, the Cats rolled to a 6-0 win at South Fork while improving to 2-0 on the young season.
The other two Little 4 teams also opened tournament play against each other on Thursday, with St. Bernard’s edging Del Norte 1-0 in Crescent City in both schools’ season openers.
Catana had one of the highlight performances of the day, scoring a hat trick in Ferndale’s win.
The senior striker now has five goals in two games.
However, it wasn’t all good news for the Cats, who will have to play without reigning Little 4 MVP Madison Hagemann for the next few weeks.
The sophomore standout, who scored a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Mendocino on Tuesday, is sidelined through injury, although Ferndale head coach Sam Licona says she should be back with the team later in the campaign.
“She’s on the road to recovery,” Licona said. “It’s definitely unfortunate. She’s a tremendous player, but knowing her mindset she’ll be back stronger.”
South Fork had just a limited roster available for the game, so both teams played with just eight players.
Arlene Glines added a pair of goals in the win, while Macie Hagemann rounded out the scoring.
The Cats, who are the defending North Coast Section Division-1 champs and have outscored their first two opponents 13-0, led 2-0 at halftime, but would pull away after the break.
Influential junior Claire Renner helped set the tone for her teammates with a big performance in defensive midfield and was “all over the field,” according to her coach, while fullbacks Taren Titus and Melina Pineda also impressed for the Cats.
Up in Crescent City, meanwhile, a young St. Bernard’s team that featured six starting freshmen got the new season off to a winning start.
Freshman midfielder Kate Bailey enjoyed a stellar start to her high school career with a player-of-the-match performance and scored the only goal of the game in the second half.
The young standout netted off a free kick from teammate Paloma Granados, another freshmen.

“It was a great start to the season,” new St. Bernard’s head coach Brandon Amis said. “We’ve got a young team with six freshmen starting and I couldn’t be more proud.”
Several players stood out in the victory, most notably Bailey, who provided a “steady presence” in midfield, according to the coach, and helped set several SB attacks in motion.
Beginning her second year as a starter between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Amis posted the clean sheet with the help of her defense, which was anchored by the experienced duo of senior Paula Bullock and junior Carli Baum.
Both of the standout defenders did a good job keeping a dangerous Del Norte attack in check with some strong tackling and by winning several 50/50 balls.
“I thought we played good overall,” Brandon Amis said. “Del Norte’s a tough team and they had us on our heels.”
Several other players also impressed for the Crusaders, including seniors CJ Figas and Malia Masayos, who combined well in attack and look ready to close out impressive high school careers with a bang, as well as freshman left winger freshman Kinley Johnson, who got her high school career off to a good start.
Another freshman, Preslee Sundquist also enjoyed a good start to the season with an impressive performance on the right side of midfield.
