By Ray Hamill — North Coast fans will have to wait just a little longer before the new Albee Stadium is unveiled.

The iconic Eureka High stadium has been undergoing renovation for the past couple of years and will open again this fall.

However, the new facility will not be ready to go for the Loggers’ football opener against Windsor later this month.

With final touches still being applied, the official opening of the new all-weather field has been pushed back and is “week-to-week,” according to Eureka High.

“We’re very, very close,” Loggers Athletic Director Omar Khattab told Humboldt Sports on Tuesday.

Khattab says he will be updating Eureka fans on the status of the renovated stadium each week.

The Loggers will also play girls and boys soccer games on the new field this fall.

For now, however, the school’s home soccer games will continue to be played at Washington Elementary School, as they have been for the past few years.

The Loggers’ season and home opener in football — against Windsor on Aug. 29 — will be played at Cal Poly Humboldt’s Redwood Bowl instead.

Eureka is also scheduled to host Marshfield (Sept. 11) and Ferndale (Sept. 25) in the month of September, and there is no word yet on whether the new field will be available by then.

If not, those two games will also be played at the Redwood Bowl.

However, according to Khattab, the new facility will definitely be available this season, it’s just a matter of when.

According to a press release, “The project is now very close to completion, and we are excited about the day when our ECS learners, athletes and community members can step onto and enjoy what we believe will be the premier high school athletic facility on the entire North Coast.”

The iconic stadium also celebrates its 100th anniversary this fall, having originally opened all the way back in 1926.

The renovations are part of an ongoing upgrade of all of the Loggers’ athletic facilities, which also includes a new gymnasium, which was opened two years ago, as well as new baseball and softball fields, which are set to debut in the spring of 2027.

“We will be keeping our learners, families, staff, alumni, and community informed week by week as we monitor the final progress of the project,” the press release said, adding that “We know how much anticipation there is surrounding this project, and we are incredibly grateful for everyone’s patience and support. We are almost there.”

Albee Stadium is named after former district principal George B. Albee.
