ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — A good week to be a Logger

By Ray Hamill — Eureka High enjoyed a big week in local sports, with several Loggers making an impact in multiple sports.

And that means they feature prominently in our weekly awards, sweeping our two athletes of the week, as well as team of the week honors.

The Eureka softball team had a memorable week, winning the 2026 Charles Lakin Tournament championship after barely qualifying for the HDN postseason event.

But when given the opportunity, the Eureka players seized it, posting three tournament wins — against Hoopa, McKinleyville and Fortuna — on the way to lifting the coveted trophy on Friday night.

And that makes the Loggers our choice for team of the week.

An honorable mention this week goes to the Eureka track and field team, which swept the two league titles at last weekend’s H-DNL championships in Crescent City, as well as the McKinleyville baseball team, which clinched a third straight Lakin baseball tournament one week after being name our team of the week.

It’s been good spring for the Loggers in track and that’s showing no signs of slowing down as they begin the North Coast Section postseason this weekend.

But the Eureka track team is not completely left out of our weekly awards.

Junior Bo Landry is one of our athletes of the week after a big showing at the league championships.

Landry did his part to help lead the Loggers to the team championship, placing first in three different events to score some valuable team points.

Joining him in our weekly awards is yet another Eureka Logger and a student-athlete who made a little bit of school history this past week.

Junior Amalia Baugh made her second straight trip to the NCS swimming championships to compete in two races and reached the final in the 200 yard freestyle, becoming the first-ever Eureka swimmer to reach an NCS final.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Bo Landry

Eureka Track and Field, Junior

Landry capped an impressive spring in league competition with a strong showing at last weekend’s H-DNL championships and walking away with three individual wins.

The impressive Eureka junior placed first in the 110 meter hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump.

And he saved his best for the biggest league meet of the spring, setting PRs in the hurdles race (15.74 seconds) and in the triple jump (43’ 2.5”).

Landry won the long jump with a mark of 20’ 11.5”.

Amalia Baugh

Eureka Swimming, Junior

Baugh made a little bit of school history in Novato last weekend when she reached the final of the 200 free in the section championships.

After ending a 15-year wait for her school by qualifying for the NCS meet a year ago, Baugh fared even better this time around, competing in both 200 free and the 100 butterfly.

The impressive junior set a new PR in the 200 free, finishing 15th overall in a time of 1 minute, 57.09 seconds, which broke her previous best time in the event by almost a second and a half.

She also placed 25th in the 100 butterfly.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Eureka Softball

The story of the week in local sports featured the Eureka softball team, which took full advantage of a last minute qualifying spot in the Charles Lakin Tournament.

This spring has been a remarkable turnaround for a team that won just two games over the previous two years combined.

Head coach Bob Secor and his staff have done an outstanding job, but much of the credit also belongs to the players, who were focused and came ready to play in the semifinal and championship game.

With several players leading the way — most notably influential seniors Bailey Brown and Macy Secor, as well as junior pitcher Makenzie Wolff — the Loggers beat Fortuna 14-7 in Friday’s final and never really looked in danger of losing.

Another senior, Tiffany Harris, also had a memorable tournament, hitting her first home run of the season in the final to put her team up by seven runs and all but seal the victory.
