
The Eureka Loggers will carry plenty of momentum into this week’s North Coast Section postseason after claiming 11 individual and a pair of team titles at the H-DNL Championships.
The top high school athletes on the North Coast traveled to Crescent City on Saturday for this year’s league meet and the Loggers won the boys and girls team titles.
Led by junior Bo Landry, the Eureka boys won five individual events and enjoyed a dominating day in the jumps on their way to scoring 164 points, which was 17 points better than second-placed Arcata.
In the girls competition, Del Norte was the closest challenger to Eureka, but the Loggers took six first places and outscored the field by 19 points on the way to securing the championship.
Landry placed first in three events, including setting a PR on the way to victory in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 16.74 seconds and edging Ferndale senior Anthony Kasso for the league title.
The Eureka junior also set a PR on his way to victory in the triple jump with a mark of 43’ 2.5”, and he led a one-two-three finish for the Loggers in the long jump, winning with a jump of 20’ 11.5”.
Eureka sophomore Natalie Wyllie also won three events to cap an outstanding season in league competition.
Wyllie placed first in both hurdles races, including a PR time of 18.11 seconds in the 100m hurdles where she edged Fortuna’s Amy Aubuchon (18.39 seconds) by less than three-tenths of a second for the victory.
Wyllie won the 300m hurdles in a time of 51.52 seconds, and teamed with Grecia Ortiz, Mariah Wyllie and Elizabeth Rominger to take the 4x400m relay.
In addition to Landry and Natalie Wyllie, six other HDN athletes won multiple events on the day, including Fortuna speedster Kavi Bolden, who placed first in three events.
Bolden continued to dominate the sprints with league titles in both the 100m (10.82 seconds) and 200m (22.34 seconds), while also teaming with Tiki Bolden, Mako Limon and Jack Stacy to win the 4x100m relay.
Eureka senior Isaiah Herbst placed second in the boys 100m, followed by Arcata’s A’sa Mason in third, while Del Norte’s Landon Balent finished second in the 200m, just three-hundredths of a second behind Kavi Bolden, with St. Bernard’s Alex Carter in third.
St. Bernard’s freshman Lulu Vainuku also had a good day in the girls sprints, placing first in both the 100m and the 4x100m relay.
Vainuku set a PR on her way to victory in the 100m, finishing in a time of 12.97 seconds and edging senior teammate Alyssa Boham by just five hundredths of a second for the win.
Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin placed third in the 100m.
Vainuku and Boham teamed with Sahara Tupua and Paula Bullock to win the 4x100m, while Eureka’s Rominger also made it two wins on the day with a first place in the 200m in a time of 26.11 seconds, followed by Fortuna’s Madison Ruiz in second and Boham in third.
Ruiz fared better in the girls 400m, edging Rominger for the victory in a time of 26.27 seconds, with Ortiz in third, while Arcata’s Bella DeCarli won the 800m in a time of 2 minutes 27.15 seconds, followed by McKinleyville teammates Lydia Davis and Amara Som in second and third.
Arcata teammates Skyler Collenberg and Jaxon Lewis each also won two events.
As expected after his record-breaking regular season, Collenberg won both the shot put with a throw of 58’ 4” and discus (166’), while Lewis was a part of the Arcata 4x400m and 4x800m relay winning teams.
Mason, Lorenzo Shaner and Eoin McGoldrick were also on the winning 4x400m team, while Micah Cristian, Sebastian Amaro and Evan Poston teamed with Lewis to win the 4x800m.
Del Norte’s Balent led the way in a fast 400m boys final, crossing the finish line in a time of 49.56 seconds, one of five PRs in the top six, with McGoldrick in second and Lewis in third, while Del Norte’s Michael Haapala was first home in the boys 800m, followed by Fortuna’s Caden Bailey in second and Arcata’s Amaro in third.
Arcata senior Ocean Walker capped an impressive HDN career with a victory in the 1600m, with the top seven runners all posting PRs.
Walker finished in a time of 4:33.35, followed by Fortuna’s Juan Ornelas in second and Arcata’s Poston in third, while Eureka’s Ryder Bullman was first across the finish line in the 3200m in a time of 10:00.25 seconds, followed by Walker in second and Ornelas in third.
Impressive Arcata sophomore Finn Boyce took first in the 300m hurdles, followed by Limon in second and Eureka freshman Miles Hayhurst-John in third.
The frontrunners in the boys 300m hurdles set a very fast pace with the top six all setting new PRs.
Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza, meanwhile, placed second to Collenberg in the shot put, with Eureka’s Malachi Brown in third, while St. Bernard’s Asher Floyd placed second to Collenberg in the discus, followed by Eureka’s Jackson Herbert in third.
Another Eureka athlete, Thomas Hoffman, also impressed on his way to placing third in the boys 110m hurdles, behind frontrunners Landry and Kasso.
The Eureka boys scored valuable team points in all three jump events, taking eight of the nine top-three spots combined.
The Loggers took the top three spots in both the long jump and high jump.
Rohan Hang finished second behind Landry in the long jump, followed by teammate Jayce Rasmussen in third, while Hang led the way in the high jump, followed by teammates Xavier De La Rosa in second and Hayhurst-John in third.
The Loggers also enjoyed a good day in the triple jump and took two of the top three spots.
Arcata’s Jonah Hessler finished second to Landry, followed by Eureka’s De La Rosa in third.
And rounding out the boys winners on the day, Del Norte senior Jason Murphy placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 12’ 6”, followed by Arcata’s Cristian in second and Fortuna’s Bode Bywater in third.
The Del Norte boys won a close battle for third in the team competition, scoring 85 points, which was one more than fourth-placed Fortuna.
Back to the girls events, Arcata freshman Kjersti MacDonald set a PR on her way to victory in the 1600m, finishing in a time of 5:34.05, followed by Eureka’s Claire Gast in second and Fortuna’s Brida Lester in third, while Gast took the victory in the 3200m, followed by Arcata’s Vivian Adams in second and Eureka’s Rathlin Hemmingsen in third.
In the girls hurdles races, Del Norte’s Annabelle White finished second to Natalie Wyllie in the 300m hurdles, followed by St. Bernard’s Amber Smith in third, while Eureka’s Epona Siggins finished third in a fast 100m hurdles that saw four of the top five finishers set PRs.
DeCarli got her second win of the day in the 4x400m, teaming with Zoe Cappuccio, Rose Mondagron and Nehla Espiritu-Blackstone for the victory, while the Del Norte girls won both the shot put and discus.
Senior Aurora Mitchell won the shot put with a PR throw of 34’ 2.5”, followed by Eureka’s Sosie Behler in second and St. Bernard’s Scarlett Zerlang in third, while senior Melody Brennan was first in the discus with a PR of 117’ 8”, followed by teammate Hollyn Wakefield in second and Arcata’s Syriah George in third.
In the high jump, Eureka’s Aurora Copeland set a PR of 4’ 10” on her way to placing first, followed by Del Norte teammates Jeana Erler and White, who tied for second, while Erler won the pole vault with a PR of 7’ 6”, followed by Arcata’s Nova Garwood in second and Del Norte’s Kansas Coulson in third.
And rounding out the individual winners on the day, Arcata’s McLaughlin capped a dominating season in the long jump with a first place and Fortuna’s Addison Burgess won the triple jump.
White, who had four top-three finishes on the day and set PRs in two of them, finished second in both the long jump and triple jump, while Burgess was third in the long jump and McLaughlin was third in the triple jump.
Arcata placed third in the race for the team championship, followed by Fortuna in fourth and St. Bernard’s in fifth.
Eureka scored 137 points for the team win, followed by Del Norte with 118.
