SOFTBALL ROUNDUP — Loggers, Warriors meet in early non-conference doubleheader

A pair of Big 5 rivals faced off in an early-season non-conference doubleheader at Washington Field in Eureka on Saturday afternoon, when the Loggers hosted defending conference champs Del Norte in a doubleheader of action.

And both games were competitive, with the visitors securing the sweep, winning 6-5 and 5-3.

The Warriors started strong and scored five runs in the top of the first inning of game one, but the Loggers would chip away at the deficit to pull within one after four innings.

However, the Warriors would plate what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the sixth.

Eureka senior Bailey Brown, who will play at College of the Redwoods after graduation, led the way for the home team at the plate and finished 2-for-4 with two runs.

Macy Secor added a base hit, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run, while Kylee Secor was 1-for-3 with a walk and Tiffany Harris went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Mackenzie Wolff (1-for-3), and Violla Kingsang (1-for-4 with an RBI) each also had a hit in the loss, while Megan Secor walked twice and scored a run.

Wolff pitched a complete game for the Loggers, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits and three walks and striking out three.

No stats were immediately available for the Warriors.

In game two, the Eureka girls led early after scoring three runs in the opening two innings, but the Warriors would battle back to tie the game in the fifth, before adding two runs in the top of the seventh and holding on late for the sweep.

Brown continued to impress for the home team, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run, while teammate Ella Moxon went 2-for-3 and also scored a run.

Megan Secor and Harris each also had a hit in the loss, with the latter also driving in a run.

Kylee Secor also walked twice.

Wolff and Kylee Secor split time in the circle.

Wolff got the start and threw five innings, allowing just four hits and three walks and striking out one, with Kylee Secor throwing two hitless innings in relief, giving up four runs on three walks and four hit-by-pitches.

Fortuna 10, South Fork 8

Fortuna continued to roll with a third early-season win at South Fork on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies scored runs in each of the first six innings, including four in the top of the second, and they led 6-2 going into the bottom of the third.

But the Cubs responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of that inning to leave the two schools tied 6-6.

However, the Fortuna girls would continue to add to their tally with four more runs over the next three innings to retake the lead, and they were able to hold on late.

“We made some costly errors on defense and didn’t make up for it at the plate,” said South Fork head coach Lisa Todd. “We are off to a good start, we just have some things we need to focus on and clean up.”

The Huskies came out swinging and hit the ball hard, collecting 15 hits, including home runs by Sephora Machado and Evalynn Little.

Little continued her blistering start to the new campaign, finishing 3-for-3.

The junior catcher, who also had a double, is batting .889 through the opening three games.

Isabel Sanchez, Olivia Hayes, Hailee Thompson, Keeley Ryles-Baker and Machado each had two hits.

Junior Addie Collenberg got the win in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings.

She gave up just three earned runs while walking four and striking out eight.

Sanchez took over in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second and got the final two outs and the save on one pitch, thanks to a double play by her defense.

Thompson made a nice catch at third base and threw to first to complete the game-ending double play.

Mackenzie Coleman led the way at the plate for the Cubs, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI, while teammate Hailey Shepherd also impressed and was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, and Makenzie Brewer was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Kendall Kercher also made some noise at the plate for the home team and was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI, while Molly Perkins went 1-for-2 with a walk and Leila Coleman went 1-for-3 with a walk.

South Fork is now 1-1.
