After opening the new baseball season with a pair of wins over Red Bluff and Hamilton at the Foothill tournament on Friday, McKinleyville High continued to roll with a 12-4 win over University Prep to close out tournament play on Saturday.
And the McKinleyville bats impressed again in the win, with nine different players hitting successfully.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-0.
“We played good,” McKinleyville head coach Mike Dobrec said. “The kids, they swung the bat well and it was good to be out on the field. It was a beautiful day to play.
“We’re off to a good start. We’ve just got to work on some small things.”
Pat Wilson provided the offensive highlight of the day for McKinleyville with a three-run home run and finished 1-for-4, while teammate Jake Brunner was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Joe Tanno also impressed for the Panthers and finished 1-for-3 with a triple, while freshman Ty Marshall went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Tate Saso (1-for-4 with a double), Rhythm Green (1-for-4 with an RBI), Ruger Baxter (1-for-2), Hunter Carper (1-for-4) and Bode Reininger (1-for-4) each also had a hit in the win.
Carper pitched three innings for the win on the mound and struck out one, with Saso and Wilson both pitching well in relief.
Next up, the Panthers will play U Prep again next Saturday in a doubleheader at McKinleyville, with game one set for 1 p.m.
Fortuna 10, South Fork 7
The Huskies got the new baseball season off to a winning start against South Fork in Miranda on Saturday.
Despite the loss, there were plenty of bright spots for the Cubs, including the pitching of Travis Way, who threw 4.1 innings for a no-decision.
“Travis Way threw a great game and gave us the chance to win,” South Fork head coach Andrew Jacobson said. “Great day of baseball. I’m really looking forward to this season.”
No stats or details were immediately available for the Huskies.
Sophomore Mason Bell enjoyed a good opening day for the Cubs at the plate, finishing 3-for-3, while also making some big plays at shortstop early in the game.
Bell took over from Way in the fifth inning and would take the loss on the mound.
South Fork’s Sheyne Casey also had good game defensively in left field, including a nice diving catch to save some runs early in the game, while Kael Puno impressed for the home team behind the plate.
The South Fork coaches also praised the play of senior John Stafslien and freshman Ryan Tosten.
