The Northern Humboldt Giants continued their impressive season over the weekend, winning all three of their games at their own tournament.
On Sunday, they capped three big days of tournament play with a 12-2 win over Siskiyou in five innings in the championship game.
With the win, the red-hot Giants improved to 12-1 on the season.
Also in tournament action on Sunday, The Wild Cactus Baseball 15U team closed out with a win over the Southern Humboldt 76ers.
The Wild Cactus were a last-minute addition to the tournament after another team pulled out late, but they won two of three games over the weekend.
The tournament championship, however, went to the host team.
Tate Saso capped a big weekend in tournament play with the win on the mound, giving up just one hit and no walks in four innings and striking out seven.
Joe Tanno threw one hitless inning in relief to close out the game and struck out two.
Bode Reininger hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game early on the 10-run rule.
Hunter Carper also had a big tournament, finishing 3-for-3 on Sunday with a home run and two doubles.
The home run was Carper’s second of the weekend, having also hit a grand slam in the Giants’ tournament opener on Friday night.
Rhythm Green and Blake Santos also impressed in Sunday’s win and each finished 2-for-3, while Tanno, Hatcher Matson and Gavin Anderson each also had a hit.
Next up, the Giants will play a doubleheader in Ukiah on Monday night, before traveling to Reno for next week’s big tournament.
“We continue to roll. We’re kind of getting the bugs ironed out,” head coach Eric Agliolo said. “Trying to get tuned up for Reno.”
Young Wild Cactus players impress in tournament play
Despite being a last-minute addition to the weekend tournament, the Wild Cactus 15Us won two of their three games, including a 9-5 victory over Southern Humboldt on Sunday.
On the opening day, Wild Cactus fell 9-0 to Sutter 17U, but just two runs separated the teams going into the sixth inning before it got away from them.
Dakota Bestul (Redwood Empire Little League) pitched a “master piece,” according to head coach Matt Tomlin, to keep his team in contention against the more experienced Sutter players.
Another young pitcher impressed for the Wild Cactus on Saturday, with Body Gaser (RELL) giving his team a strong start in a comfortable 13-4 win over Red Bluff.
On Sunday, the Wild Cactus players found themselves trailing 0-5 in the fourth inning before piecing together a nice rally on the way to a four-run victory.
Eel River’s Aidan “AJ” Campbell and Scott Oldham combined to close out the game on the hill with three shutout innings between them to lead the team to victory.
Ryan Tosten pitched two scoreless innings to start the game and struck out five.
McKinleyville brothers Tyson and Casanova Marshall also had great weekends for the team, according to the coach.
“I am so impressed with this amazing group of young players,” Tomlin said. “They battle with no fear and had an amazing weekend playing up against varsity players.
“They listen and accept coaching and they played as a team all weekend.”
