It was a good week for several former H-DNL standouts on the college baseball and softball fields, none more so than Eureka’s Kira Morris.
The 2023 Eureka High graduate got the win in the circle in Friday’s PacWest Championship game, as Concordia defeated Azusa Pacific 12-5.
It was also a good week for Nick Dugan, Cayden Lee, Daniel Osborne, Jackson Giacone and Josephine Heuberger. More on them in a moment.
Morris, who is in her second year playing with the Golden Eagles after being named the 2023 Humboldt Sports Big 5 Girls Athlete of the Year, pitched 1.1 innings in relief in Friday’s championship game and gave up two hits on her way to her fifth win of the season.
She has made 18 appearances for Concordia this year (64.2 innings) and is now 5-8 with an ERA of 2.38.
Morris got the win in each of her last two appearances.
She struck out a season-best eight in a 1-0 loss to Pace in mid March.
The high-flying Golden Eagles are 40-14 on the season and went 25-11 in conference.
The PacWest title is the program’s third straight — second straight for Morris — and earns the team an automatic berth for next week’s NCAA DII Regional Tournament.
Former St. Bernard’s Crusader Nick Dugan, meanwhile, recorded his fifth win of the season for the Stanford baseball team on Monday.
The 2022 SB graduate, who memorably led the Crusaders to a NorCal championship in his senior season in high school, threw seven innings for the win on the mound against Sacramento State, which is coached by Ferndale native Reggie Christiansen.
The Cardinal won the game 2-1 and Dugan struck out six while allowing six hits and no walks.

Kira Morris receives her 2023 Humboldt Sports Big 5 Girls Athlete of the Year award from Jennifer Perrone of DelReka Distributing, one of the award sponsors.
The junior pitcher is now 5-0 on the season, including wins in three of his last four appearances, with an ERA of 5.34.
Dugan’s five wins are tied for the team lead and his six strikeouts on Monday were a season-high.
The Cardinal are now 23-19 on the season and 8-17 in conference.
Christiansen is enjoying another big season in charge of the Hornets, who are 27-19 overall and 11-5 in conference.
Another former St. Bernard’s standout was also in the news this week.
Cayden Lee is a junior playing for Simpson University in the NAIA baseball postseason.
Lee and the Red Hawks are in North Dakota competing at the NorthStar Conference Tournament and the former H-DNL standout has been on fire at the plate over the past two days.

Simpson opened with a 9-5 win over Dakota State on Thursday and the third baseman finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs.
He carried that momentum into a Friday matchup against Bellevue, which the Red Hawks lost 8-3.
Lee, who was named to the Cal Pac all-conference team earlier in the week, hit his third home run of the tournament in the loss.
The 2022 SB graduate now has eight home runs on the season, including five in his last five games.
The Red Hawks will play a tournament elimination game against Cal Pac rival La Sierra on Saturday night.
Former Fortuna Husky Daniel Osborne, meanwhile, was named second-team all-conference for Shasta College earlier this week.

Osborne, who recently enjoyed a big homecoming when the Knights traveled to play College of the Redwoods, played in 35 games this season for Shasta and averaged .328 at the plate, which was second best on the team.
The 2022 Fortuna graduate, who was playing his first season of college ball, hit his only home run of the season against CR and had 22 RBIs this spring.
He also showcased his speed with a team-high 17 stolen bases, 12 more than any of his teammates and fifth most in the Golden Valley Conference.
The Knights finished the season 16-24 overall and were 11-14 in conference.
Former Eureka Logger Jackson Giacone was also in action on the college baseball fields this week as high-flying Mt. San Antonio College begins its bid for a state championship.
The Mounties opened the SoCal Regional tournament with back-to-back wins over Desert on Friday (5-0) and Saturday (8-2) to advance to next weekend’s Super Regionals.

And rounding out a big week for former H-DNL standouts, Del Norte’s Josephine Heuberger has been named to the Pacific Coast Conference all-conference team for Palomar JC after helping to lead her team to a dominating 15-0 run through conference play.
The former Warrior plays second base for the Comets, who won their opening two playoff games on Friday and Saturday to advance to next weekend’s Super Regionals.
The Comets defeated College of the Canyons 8-0 on Friday and 7-3 on Saturday.
Heuberger was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk in Friday’s win and 2-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday’s game.
The Comets are now 38-3 on the year.
And Heuberger has played a big role in that success, hitting .421 with two home runs, six triples, six doubles and 32 RBIs, as well as stealing a team-high seven bases.
