Former H-DNL standout returns to the North Coast with a bang

Former Fortuna Husky Daniel Osborne returned to the North Coast with a statement performance over the weekend.

The 2022 Fortuna High graduate, who is playing baseball for Shasta College, traveled back to Humboldt County on Friday to play a pair of games against College of the Redwoods at Belotti Field across from the Redwood Acres.

And Osborne returned with a bang.

The first order of business was the completion of a suspended game from earlier in the season, which the Corsairs won 15-8.

The two Golden Valley Conference rivals than split two full weekend games, with the visitors taking game one 17-11 on Friday and the host Corsairs taking the season series finale on Saturday by a score of 15-10.

And Osborne had a big impact at the plate in both of the full weekend games, as he continues an impressive spring playing for the Knights.

In game one, he finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs, including his first-ever collegiate home run.

The freshman right fielder added three more hits in Saturday’s showdown to round out an impressive return to the coast, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, three more RBIs and two more runs.

Osborne has been one of the Knight’s most productive players this spring.

For the season he is batting an impressive .333, which is second best on the team, with five doubles and 19 RBIs.

He also has showcased his speed on the bases with a team-high 14 stolen bases, which is also sixth best in the GVC, and he has walked 14 times.

Osborne is one of three local players on this year’s Shasta team, along with another former Husky, Rylan Lommori, and Del Norte’s Cole Blackburn, the latter of whom has seen some time on the mound out of the bullpen.

Lommori hit a double in Friday’s win, while Blackburn threw 1.2 innings in Saturday’s loss.

Osborne wasn’t the only player to hit a home run on a windy weekend at the ballpark, with six players combining for seven long balls in game one and two more in game two.

His Shasta teammate Patrick Bowen hit two home runs in the opener, with CR’s Bode Joyner, Seth Grammer, Justin Powell and Jack Irvine blasting one each

Joyner added a grand slam in Saturday’s game.

Grammer now has seven home runs on the season, while Joyner has four.

With the weekend split, the Corsairs are now 8-21 overall and 5-15 in the GVC, while the Knights are 15-21 and 10-11.
