By Ray Hamill — Thursday morning’s earthquake off the Humboldt County coast has had an immediate effect on the local sports schedule, with one of two local tournaments impacted.
The opening day of the Coach Tregs Classic men’s basketball tournament at College of the Redwoods has been immediately postponed.
A power outage at the school, coupled with the necessity to clear the buildings, forced the postponement.
The Corsairs were scheduled to open the tournament against Mendocino College on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
That game will not take place as scheduled.
The McKinleyville boys basketball tournament, which gets under way on Thursday afternoon, has not been affected by the earthquake as was previously reported.
The Ferndale boys will be able to travel to play at the tournament despite earlier fears they would not.
The Cats are scheduled to open against McKinleyville on Thursday night.
Thursday night’s scheduled Cal Poly Humboldt basketball games, meanwhile, are still going ahead as planned.
According to CR Athletic Director Bob Brown, the Corsairs are working on rescheduling the opening-day games.
Details will be announced as soon as the rescheduling is finalized, although they are hoping to now play the three-day tournament on Friday through Sunday instead of on Thursday through Saturday.
The CR men are also scheduled to play Southwestern Oregon on Friday at 7, before closing out the tournament against Simpson on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Those games could be rescheduled as well.
The Corsairs are 7-1 on the season and recently won all three games at the Mendocino College Tournament, including a victory over the host school in the championship game.
