It’s been a good start to the Humboldt Eagles tournament for some of the local teams, including the Northern Humboldt Giants and the tourney hosts.
The Humboldt Eagles 17Us continued their impressive start with a pair of victories on Friday, improving to 4-0 at the tournament and putting one foot in Sunday’s championship game.
The Eagles defeated the Colts D team 12-2 early on Friday and followed that with another 12-2 win over the Colts C team later in the day.
The Giants, meanwhile, also won two games on Friday, defeating Legacy 11-2 and the Chico Suns 9-7.
Kyle Giacone is enjoying a big tournament for the Eagles 17Us and that continued against the Colts D.
The soon-to-be Eureka junior got the win on the mound and also hit a three-run home run to help key the offense.
“He’s having a great tournament right now,” Eagles manager TJ Brogan said of Giacone, who gave up just one earned run on one hit in 2.1 innings and struck out three.
Bryce Pope and Connor King each pitched in relief and combined to hold their opponents hitless the remainder of the way.
Pope also made some noise at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI doubles and two runs, while Ty Wade was 2-for-2 with a run scored, Lucas Ask was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs, and Bryson Burns was 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double and two runs.
The Eagles continued to impress with their second 10-run win later in the day.
Brayden Bermers had a big game on the mound and carried a no-hitter in into the fifth inning.

He would finish the five-inning game giving up just one earned run on one hit while striking out nine, and doing so with just 84 pitches.
“I was very impressed with the players,” Brogan said. “They’re finally hitting the way this team should be hitting, and that was really nice to see.
“Brayden is finding his groove on the bump again, and he was about as elite as he could possibly be. We kept the errors down and got the hits up.”
Scotty Brogan led the way at the plate and finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double, while Burns continue his impressive day and was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs and Brice Neuman was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
Ask added a bases-clearing double, while Giacone had an RBI double and Wyatt Zeller was 1-for-1 with a double and also reached base on a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
The Eagles will have a day off on Saturday before Sunday’s playoff round.
