The Northern Humboldt Giants racked up 13 hits on the way to a comprehensive 16-2 win over the Humboldt Eagles in five innings in American Legion baseball action at Arcata High School on Tuesday night.
The Giants continued their impressive summer with the big victory, with several players stepping up at the plate.
Cole Zeller led the way as he continues his impressive summer with the team and he finished 2-for-3 with a home run.
Tanner Kees and Ben Lukens each also impressed at the plate and both finished 3-for-3, including a double by Kees.
And, according to head coach Eric Agliolo, the Giants players are playing solid fundamental baseball.
“I thought we played well,” Agliolo said. “They’re a 19U team and we didn’t seem to miss a beat against them.
“We hit the ball well. We played good fundamental defense and we ran the bases well.”
Hoopa’s Brandon Romero got the win on the mound, throwing four strong innings and allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four.
Tate Saso pitched one inning in relief and gave up just one hit.
Mateo Reiman also had a good day at the plate for the hosts and was 2-for-3 with a double.
It was a disappointing outing for the Eagles, however.
“Unfortunately not too many positives to highlight for us,” Eagles head coach Tommy Gale said. “It was one of those games where we struggled to find the strike zone, when the ball was put into play it found holes, we did not help ourselves out in handling the ball defensively, and we struggled to get anything going offensively.”
Gale was impressed with how the Giants played, and with one player in particular.

“The Giants seemed to do just about everything right, led by Cole Zeller who put down a couple of beautiful bunts, hit one over the fence and seemed to track down every ball hit to him in center field,” he added.
Romero, Rhythm Green, Joe Capp, Lyle McKinnon and Bode Reininger each also had a base hit for the Giants.
The Eagles will try to bounce back when they play the Southern Humboldt 76ers in Fortuna on Thursday night.
“We’ll definitely be getting back to the drawing board (Wednesday) at practice and will look to put together a much more competitive game tomorrow against the 76ers,” Gale said.
Thursday’s game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Newburg Park.
Next up for the Giants is a trip to Reno for a tournament this weekend.
