Arcata’s Bella DeCarli continued her impressive spring in track and field with three wins at the fourth H-DNL meet of the season at Fortuna on Wednesday.

The standout freshman won both the 200 meters and 400m, and also teamed with Zalayshia Velazquez, Nicole Nozawa and Ada Kinziger to win the 4x300m relay.

The Tigers won seven of the 17 events and would take the team win with 138 points, followed by Eureka (127), Fortuna (108), St. Bernard’s 53) and Del Norte (38).

DeCarli set a PR on her way to victory in the 200m with a time of 27.41 seconds, with Eureka’s Emily Pesch and Evelyn Ladika in second and third, respectively.

The Arcata freshman won the 400m in a time of 1 minute, 1.74 seconds, followed by Kinziger in second and Fortuna’s Amy Aubuchon in third.

Other multiple winners on the day included Nozawa, Eureka’s Sequoia Ashby and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus.

In addition to relay win, Nozawa also placed first in the 300m hurdles with a PR time of 49.61 seconds, while Florvilus won both the 100m hurdles and the high jump.

The impressive Florvilus set a PR in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.34 seconds, which is a new school record, and edged Pesch for the victory in the high jump with a jump of 5’ 4”.

Pesch also cleared 5’ 4” in the event, which was a PR, but Florvilus took the win with one less missed attempt.

The St. Bernard’s junior tied the school record with her jump, and she would break that mark just two days later in Redding (we’ll have more on that when we get more details).

Florvilus now has three top-six North Coast Section marks, including the top mark in the 100m hurdles, fifth best in the high jump and sixth best in the 300m hurdles.

Arcata Quincy Collins was third in the high jump.

Ashby, meanwhile, won both the 800m (2:30.26) and 1600m (5:41.91), with teammate Miriam Mende second in the 800m, followed by Arcata’s Zoe Cappuccio in third, while Arcata’s Soquel MacDonald was second in the 1600m, followed by Mende in third.

MacDonald and Cappuccio teamed with Sonya Chisholm and Sydney Ventuleth to place first in the 4x800m relay, while Eureka’s Pesch and Ladika would team with Elizabeth Rominger and Grecia Ortiz to win the 4x100m relay.

Fortuna’s Brylee Barsanti also had a good day and placed second in both hurdles races, with Del Norte freshman Avrey Ritter third in the 100m hurdles and Fortuna’s Aubuchon third in the 300m hurdles.

In the throwing events, St. Bernard’s senior Madelyn Shanahan is beginning to peak at a good time and broke her own school record on the way to winning the discus with a throw of 113’ 1”, which is the third best mark in the NCS this spring.

Del Norte’s Hollyn Wakefield also set a PR on her way to victory in the shot put (34’ 4.25”), with Eureka’s Isabella Claussen was second in both the shot put and discus.

Del Norte’s Breann Winingham was third in the shot put, while her teammate Melody Brennan was third in the discus.

And rounding out the day’s winners, Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson won the pole vault with a PR of 8’ 6”.
