Whitney leads the way as Tigers close out regular season strong

Arcata senior Nathan Whitney set a pair of PRs on his way to three victories at the fourth and final H-DNL regular-season track and field meet at Fortuna on Wednesday.

Whitney was first across the line in both the 1600 meters and 3200m, and set PRs in both races with times of 4 minutes, 30.91 seconds and 9:59.52, respectively.

He also teamed with Eoin McGoldrick, Evan Poston and Noah Macknicki to win the 4x800m relay.

Seven different athletes won a pair of events including record-setting sophomore Deken Hanks of Del Norte.

Just a few days after setting a new H-DNL record in the 100m, Hanks placed first in the race again with a time of 10.8 seconds, followed by teammate Caden Harrison in second and Fortuna’s Kavi Bolden in third.

The standout sophomore also was a part of Del Norte’s 4x100m relay winning team, along with Harrison, Kyle Dixon and Landon Balent.

Harrison also was a double winner on the day and rounded out a good afternoon with a victory in the 300m hurdles, edging Ferndale’s Isaak Kasso for first and crossing the finish line in a time of 43 seconds flat.

McKinleyville’s Brayden Adkins was third.

Kasso, who is enjoying an outstanding spring on the track, continued to impress with a PR on his way to victory in the 110m hurdles, finishing in a time of 15.21 seconds.

His younger brother Anthony Kasso was second, followed by Eureka’s McCormick Petrus in third.

Isaak Kasso also won the triple jump with a PR of 41’ 11”, followed by the Fortuna duo of Russell Pascascio and Alfonso Medina in second and third.

Del Norte’s Nathan Barker was second in the shot put, followed by teammate Zaid Titus in third, while, Arcata’s Neiko Bryson placed second in the discus, followed by McKinleyville’s Nick Maher in third.

Kamrud won both the 200m and 400m, setting a PR in the former with a time of 23.58 seconds, and winning the latter in a time of 53.25 seconds.

McKinleyville’s Orphao Nowell-Grande placed second in the 200m, followed by Fortuna’s Jack Stacy in third, while Arcata’s McGoldrick was second in the 400m, followed by teammate Eric Jackson in third.

Docherty, meanwhile, was first across the line in the 800m in a time of 2:05.76, with teammate Chase Jimenez second and Arcata’s Kai Frimodig third.

Docherty and Jimenez also teamed with Pio Maines and Rohan Hang to win the 4x400m relay.

Rounding out the days winners, Fortuna’s Pascascio took first in the high jump with a jump of 6’ 3”, while his teammate Christopher Duey won the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet and Eureka’s Elias Ladika was first in the long jump with a jump of 19’ 6”.

Rounding out the day’s top three results, Arcata took all top three spots in the 3200m, with Poston following Whitney across the line and Reece Thompson in third.

Thompson also placed third in the 1600m, with Del Norte’s Dylan Rodriguez in second.

Arcata won the team event with 129 points, but there was little to separate the next three teams, Del Norte (98), Eureka (93) and Fortuna (90).

Next up for the H-DNL, the league championship prelims will take place at McKinleyville on Tuesday, followed by the league championships four days later, also at McKinleyville.
