By Ray Hamill — With the local summer baseball season beginning to wind down, the Humboldt Eagles 17Us will open postseason play at the District 1 Class A Tournament on Thursday night.

The Eagles will carry plenty of momentum into the big tourney in Fairfield after a good month on the baseball fields, a run that included a recent championship at their own tournament.

They open the postseason against FEBA at 7 p.m.

The Eagles did drop a pair of final tune-up games over the weekend, losing twice to The Show 18Us out of Redding by scores of 10-7 and 16-3.

However, Eagles manager TJ Brogan has his players playing well this summer and they will head into the postseason tournament with high expectations.

“My guys were still driving the ball well,” Brogan said of the weekend losses. “We were simply outmatched.

“That wasn’t the way we wanted to go into this state tournament, but nevertheless we are going in to make some noise. I can always count on these guys to get the bats rolling.”

The two weekend losses might actually help the Eagles as they get set for their biggest games of the summer. Facing some tough competition in the lead up certainly won’t hurt.

“That team was really good, easily the best team we’ve played all summer,” Brogan added. “They didn’t have a guy throw less than 80 MPH.”

Scotty Brogan got the start on the hill for game one of the doubleheader, with Bryce Pope also pitching in relief.

Connor King pitched the final inning and did not allow any runs while striking out three.

The Eagles were missing two of their best players for the two games, with Kyle Giacone and Brayden Bermers called up to help out the club’s 19Us at their postseason tournament.

Ferndale’s Cash Mobley got the start on the mound for game two, with Bryson Burns, Ty Wade and Max Collins pitching in relief, but it was a tough game for the Eagles pitchers going up against a quality lineup that hit the ball well.

“The Show’s bats really woke up in the second game,” TJ Brogan said.

The Eagles are now 14-10.
