By Ray Hamill — One of the busiest coaches on the North Coast has found a new home for the summer.
A state winner as a coach in multiple sports, St. Bernard’s legend Matt Tomlin has been named the new head coach of the Medford Rogues for the summer 2027 collegiate baseball season.
The hiring was announced this week.
Tomlin, who was an assistant coach with the Humboldt Crabs this past summer, will now face off against his former club in 2027.
And he’s looking forward to the new challenge.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to be the head coach of such a great Oregon team,” he said. “And I want to thank owner Dave May and GM Jeff Weiss for the opportunity.
“They have a beautiful stadium and Southern Oregon loves their baseball, but I’m going to miss the Humboldt Crabs.”
Tomlin has a lifelong association with the Crabs, having originally served with the legendary local club as a bat boy when he was just seven-years-old.
He would go on to play for the Crabs from 1995 to 1998, setting a club record for most career saves, and he was inducted into the club’s hall of fame two years ago.
“I’m very thankful to the Crabs board and manager Jeff Giacomini,” he said. “I’ll always be a Humboldt Crabs fan.”
Tomlin replaces Kevin Olmstead, who was named the Pacific Empire League Coach of the Year after leading the Rogues to a third-place finish in the league standings this past summer, one spot ahead of the Crabs.
The Rogues finished the season 28-13, including a 15-10 record in conference play.
Tomlin coaches three sports at St. Bernard’s, where he also serves as the school’s athletic director.
He has won two state championships in football, as well as one in girls basketball, and he also has enjoyed plenty of success in high school baseball, leading the Crusaders to a NorCal championship in 2022.
