Warriors win tournament opener; Little 4 schedule updates

With a bye in conference play this week, the Del Norte Warriors are playing at the Hidden Valley baseball tournament.

They opened tournament play on Thursday with a comfortable 9-1 win over Marshfield.

The victory was a nice response after the Warriors suffered a 3-2 loss at Ferndale on Tuesday.

But while the Warriors are out of town, the rest of the Big 5 saw their schedules affected this week because of the weather.

All four single games in baseball and softball originally scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed until early April.

Some of Friday’s Little 4 games, meanwhile, have also been affected by the weather and field conditions.

As of Thursday night, St. Bernard’s scheduled baseball doubleheader at Hoopa is still on for Friday, with game one set for 2 p.m.

The scheduled softball doubleheader between the two schools, however, has bene pushed back to Monday.

A scheduled baseball doubleheader in Miranda between South Fork and Ferndale, meanwhile, remains up in the air as of Thursday night.

Cubs head coach Chris Contreras said he will make a call on the field early Friday morning.

The softball doubleheader between the two schools, however, remains on, weather permitting, with first pitch in Miranda set for 2 p.m.

The Ferndale and St. Bernard’s baseball teams are both 2-0 in the Little 4 and tied for the conference lead, while South Fork and Hoopa are both 0-2.

The St. Bernard’s softball team’s doubleheader at Hoopa has been pushed back to Monday.

In softball, St. Bernard’s is 2-0 in conference and South Fork is 0-2, while Ferndale and Hoopa have not yet played any conference games.

At Hidden Valley, meanwhile, Collin Tromble impressed for the Del Norte boys in their tournament opener and got the win on the mound.

Aiden Rice led the way at the plate and went 2-for-4.

The Warriors took control of the game with six runs in the third inning, in large part thanks to couple of walks and two hit batsmen.

With the win, the Del Norte boys improved to 5-3-1 and they are unbeaten in six of their last seven games.

They will continue tournament play against Mazama on Friday at noon.

The Del Norte girls, meanwhile, competed at a softball tournament in Medford earlier this week, playing three games.

They opened with a 17-1 win over Lincoln, before dropping back-to-back games against South Ridge (9-1) and West Linn (6-1).

The Warriors are now 7-4 on the season.

They are scheduled to open conference play next week with a three-game series against Fortuna.

They will play a single game at Fortuna on Wednesday, before hosting the Huskies in a doubleheader the following Saturday.
