
Eureka’s Emily Pesch and Sequoia Ashby and Arcata’s Bella DeCarli were all multiple winners at Wednesday’s league-opening track and field meet at Fortuna.
Ashby led a one-two-three finish for the Eureka girls in the 800 meters and also placed first in the 1600m, while Pesch continued her impressive start to the new season by placing first in the high jump and teaming with Evelyn Ladika, Elizabeth Rominger and Grecia Ortiz to win the 4x100m relay.
The Loggers won five of the 16 events on the way to a comfortable team win.
The team’s 144 points easily out-paced second-placed Arcata (107), with Fortuna (102) in third and Del Norte (46) and St. Bernard’s (43) rounding out the top-five teams.
Ashby recorded a PR on her way to victory in the 1600m in a time of 5 minutes, 35.48 seconds, followed by teammate Claire Gast in second and Arcata’s Soquel MacDonald in third.
In the 800m, Ashby won with a time of 2 minutes, 32.76 seconds, followed by teammates Gast in second and Miriam Mende in third.
It was the only one-two-three finish for any team, boys or girls, at the league opener.
Pesch, meanwhile, won the high jump with a jump of 5’ 2”, followed by Arcata’s Quincy Collins in second and Del Norte’s Lily Sherman in third.
DeCarli was equally impressive on her way to winning the 400m with a PR of 1:02.92, and she also teamed with Zalayshia Velazquez, Nicole Nozawa and Ada Kinziger to place first in the 4x400m relay.
The Fortuna girls won both sprints.
Maya Brightman won the 100m with a PR of 13.22 seconds, followed by Velazquez in second and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus in third, while Allie Cox placed first in the 200m with a time of 27.81 seconds, with Velazquez in second and Brightman in third.
Eureka’s Ortiz placed second to DeCarli in the 400m, followed by Arcata’s Nozawa in third.
Long distance specialist MacDonald placed first in the 3200m with a time of 13:11.00, followed by her Arcata teammate Sydney Ventuluth in second and Eureka’s Rathlin Hemmingsen in third.
Fortuna’s Brylee Barsanti had a good day in the hurdles races, placing first in the 100m hurdles in a time of 18.18 seconds and third in the 300m hurdles.
Florvilus won the 300m hurdles with a PR of 48.75 seconds, followed by Fortuna’s Amy Aubuchon in second, while Del Norte’s Avery Ritter was second in the 100m hurdles, followed by McKinleyville’s Emma Sobehrad in third.
Eureka junior Isabella Claussen had a good day in the throwing events, placing first in the shot put with a throw of 32’ 3.5” and second in the discus.
St. Bernard’s Madelyn Shanahan won the discus with a throw of 104’ 7”, with teammate Quinn Stokesberry in third, while Del Norte’s Hollyn Wakefield placed second in the shot put, followed by McKinleyville’s Syriah George in third.
Rounding out the winners on the day, Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson placed first in the pole vault with a PR of 8’; Fortuna’s Bella Mitten was first in the long jump with a jump of 15’ 1”; and Del Norte’s Sherman placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 32’ 9”.
Mitten placed second in the triple jump, followed by Eureka’s Victoria Ricca in third, while Ricca also placed second in the long jump, followed by Eureka’s Ladika in third.
The second league meet of the season will take place at McKinleyville next Wednesday.
