The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks on Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader at Dominican in San Rafael.

The Lumberjacks lost game one 9-2 but responded to take game two 6-2.

The Humboldt women will continue a busy few days with four more games at San Francisco State on Friday and Saturday.

And they won’t be the only local college team in action, as both the College of the Redwoods baseball and softball teams look to take advantage of the clear weather as well.

After playing just two games in the first half of the month, the CR women will play five games in three days this week, including three make-up games, as they look to build some momentum ahead of conference play.

The Corsairs, who are 1-10, will play two make-up games at West Valley on Thursday and a make-up game at San Mateo on Friday, before returning to the North Coast to host Chabot College in a doubleheader on Friday.

Head coach Megan Valente and her players will be hoping for a big turnout against Chabot.

“It really does hype up the girls,” Valente said earlier this season.

The Redwoods baseball team will also be in action at home this week, as the Corsairs look to put some recent struggles behind them.

The CR men began the season with eight straight wins, which was their best start to a campaign since 1988, but have since lost five straight and are now 8-5 overall and 1-5 in the Golden Valley Conference.

The Corsairs play a three-game series against Feather River this week, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at Noon and 3 p.m. and also including a single game on Saturday at noon.

The three games will take place at Bomber Field across from the Redwood Acres and will be the team’s first home games of the season.

The CR men will play their next three series at home.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women, meanwhile, are now 12-8 overall and 5-3 in conference.

In game one at San Rafael on Wednesday, the Jacks gave up six runs in the bottom of the first and never recovered.

They had just four hits in the loss, including a home run by Shelby Shanks.

Former Eureka Logger McKenna Beach had a base hit in the loss and finished 1-for-2 while also reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.

The sophomore utility player, who played third base on Wednesday, has started 18 of the Jacks’ 20 games this year.

The 2022 Eureka graduate also had a base hit in game two at Dominican and finished 1-for-3, as did another former Eureka Logger, Sadie Hampton.

The junior right fielder, who also played two seasons at College of the Redwoods before transferring to Cal Poly this year, was making her second start of the season and drove in one of her team’s runs.

Senior standout Izzy Starr hit two home runs in the win, her first of the season, while Alyssa Smokey also had a home run.
