BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Cubs, Cats both win; Warriors lose a shootout

The South Fork Cubs extended their winning streak to seven straight in boys basketball with a 64-35 win over Mendocino on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, the Del Norte Warriors lost a high-scoring game at Gold Beach by a score of 88-79, while the Ferndale Wildcats got the better of Anderson Valley 46-37.

The Cubs, who will host the Geno Cotter Memorial Tournament later this week, improved to 7-2 with their win.

Tommy Rotbergs remained red hot for the team and finished with a game-high 34 points, including five 3s.

The game was tied 20-20 at halftime, but the Cubs pulled away with a big second half, scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter alone.

“Excellent team effort,” head coach Taylor Morrow said. “I am really proud how well we are playing as a team, being connected and playing for one another.”

John Harding was a “great facilitator,” according to the coach, while Jasper Wilke “provided huge energy and was a glue guy for us off the bench.”

The Cubs open their tournament against Laytonville at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Gold Beach 88, Del Norte 79

Gianni Altman exploded for 52 points on Tuesday night to lead Gold Beach to a nine-point victory over the Warriors.

Described by Del Norte head coach Cris Rice as “the best player we’ve faced all year,” Altman took full advantage of several trips to the free throw line and nailed 29 of 31 attempts.

Ethan Thomas continued to shine for the Warriors and finished with 29 points, while teammate Wyatt Robson added 20 points, including five 3s in the second quarter alone.

Merrick Crabb also had a big game for Del Norte and finished with 17 points.

Trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Warriors pulled to within one, but the Panthers held on late in front of a packed house at Gold Beach.

Oscar Bowdish also impressed for the Warriors, while Westyn Fitch provided a spark off the bench.

Rice admitted afterwards that the Warriors (4-6) need to do a better job defensively.

Next up, Del Norte opens the Anderson tournament against Willows on Thursday.

Ferndale 46, Anderson Valley 37

The Wildcats continued to play sluggish on offense with so many players recovering from recent sickness, but the team defense carried them to a nine-point win on Tuesday night.

“I think our guys showed why defense can keep you in games when you are struggling offensively,” head coach Tristan Waters said.

Jack Westfall finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in the win, while teammate Isaac Kasso enjoyed “his best game of the season,” according to the coach, as he continues to evolve into a key player for the Cats off the bench.

Kasso finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Kannon Christiansen added 11 boards.

Ferndale is now 5-3 and will play at the Geno Cotter Memorial Tournament, beginning on Thursday.
