No shortage of local tournaments on the North Coast this week

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for an action-packed few days in high school basketball here on the North Coast, with no less than four local tournaments scheduled.

The action gets under way on Wednesday evening at the McKinleyville girls tournament, with St. Bernard’s (6-0), Fortuna (4-5) and Eureka (7-2) Joining the host school (6-1).

Three more local tournaments tip off on Thursday, including the Logger Classic at Eureka, which will feature three local boys teams in a field of six.

Opening day sees McKinleyville (5-2) take on Shasta at 4:30 p.m., St. Bernard’s (4-3) and Saint Mary’s at 6 p.m. and Eureka (2-4) and Brookings-Harbor at 7:30 p.m.

Also on Thursday, the South Fork boys and girls teams will host the annual Geno Cotter Memorial Tournament.

The boys tourney will feature six teams, including four local programs.

Opening day sees Ferndale (5-3) take on Northcoast Prep at 4 p.m., Hoopa (2-6) and Round Valley at 5:30 p.m. and South Fork (7-2) and Laytonville at 8:30 p.m.

The girls tournament, meanwhile, will feature four teams.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., Hoopa (1-7) plays Round Valley, and on Friday evening South Fork plays Laytonville.

The four girls teams will play two games each on Saturday.

Camryn Pinard and the Panthers take on St. Bernard’s on Wednesday night.

Among the teams traveling out of the area this weekend, the Fortuna boys (6-3) will play at the Nevada Union tournament in Grass Valley, opening against Oak Ridge on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Del Norte boys (4-6) will play at the Anderson tournament, opening against Willows at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Del Norte girls (6-2) will also travel for the Central Valley tournament in Redding, opening against Lassen, also on Thursday.

Both Arcata teams will travel to the Red Bluff tournament on Thursday, with the girls (5-2) playing Red Bluff at 5:30 p.m. and the boys (4-3) opening against University Prep at 8:30 p.m.
