By Ray Hamill — The Ferndale Mustangs will look to continue their recent dominance in local youth football on Sunday, when the Six Rivers Conference hosts three championship games in Crescent City.

The Mustangs, who are the defending champions in two of the three age groups, will play in all three championship games.

The action gets under way at 9:30 a.m., with Ferndale taking on top seed McKinleyville in the single-A decider.

The AA championship game kicks off at noon and features Ferndale and Eel River Valley, with the AAA showdown between Ferndale and Redwood Beasts at 2:30 p.m.

The Beasts earned the No. 1 seed in AAA after going 6-0 in the regular season, including a 24-14 win over the Mustangs last month, while Ferndale is seeded No. 2 after going 5-1.

Both teams comfortably shut out their opponents in their respective playoff openers, with the Beasts topping Eel River 44-0 and the Mustangs beating Del Norte 25-0.

The AA decider features the Nos. 1 and 3 seeds.

The No. 1 Mustangs were 7-0 in the regular season, including a 14-6 win over Eel River in early October, and they won their semifinal 14-6 over McKinleyville last week.

Eel River, meanwhile, is seeded No. 3 after going 5-2 in the regular season and won a pair of playoff games to get to the championship.

The young Huskies defeated Del Norte Blue 40-6 in their playoff opener, before knocking off No. 2 Redwood Beasts in impressive fashion with a 39-6 win last weekend.

In single-A, McKinleyville earned the top seed with a perfect 7-0 record in the regular season, including an 11-6 win over No. 2 Ferndale, which was 6-1.

The top two seeds both won their playoff openers a week ago, with McKinleyville beating Del Norte Gold 13-0 and Ferndale beating Del Norte Blue 26-6.
