The 19U Humboldt Eagles rallied from a four-run deficit to complete an impressive opening weekend on Sunday, winning 5-4 at Napa to make it four wins in four games.
After defeating the Mendocino Dirtbags 8-3 in Ukiah on Friday night, the Eagles followed that with three wins at Napa on Saturday and Sunday, capped by the late rally in the series finale.
Pitching was a big part of the weekend success, with Caleb Cruiz tossing a complete game for the win in the finale, striking out five.
Garrison Finck led the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Earlier in the day, C.J. Van Meter struck out five in six innings work in a 10-5 win, with Ruiz again instrumental.
The outgoing St. Bernard’s senior finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, with Cameron Saso and Kalebh Hill each getting a pair of hits.
Jaden Gorge also had a big game, finishing with three walks and scoring two runs.
Saturday’s game
Finck pitched seven innings in a 7-2 win to give the Eagles the early momentum in the weekend series.
Finck was outstanding in his summer debut and allowed just two unearned runs.
Hill struck out three in two innings for his first save of the American Legion season.
At the plate, Bode Joyner had, in head coach Matt Tomlin’s words, “a monster day,” finishing 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Saso drove in a pair of runs on a pair of sac flies, while Lane Thrap was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sasa led the way defensively with some outstanding plays at shortstop.
