The Humboldt Eagles 19U got the American Legion season off to an impressive start in Ukiah on Friday night, defeating the Mendocino Dirtbags 8-3 at Anton Stadium.
The Eagles, who feature an all-star lineup of the best young players on the North Coast, lived up to expectations in the opener, with several players stepping up.
On the mound, three Humboldt pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters, with Ferndale’s Landon Gomes tossing seven innings for the win and striking out nine.
Bode Joyner and C.J. Van Meter each pitched one inning in relief, with Joyner striking out two and Van Meter three.
At the plate, outgoing St. Bernard’s senior Caleb Ruiz had a big game, finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Former Fortuna teammates Cody Emmons and JB Lewis each finished 2-for-5, and also displayed their speed on the bases.
Defensively, Kalebh Hill made two outstanding plays in right field.
In addition, Brady Munson had a squeeze bunt RBI, and Lane Thrap and Garrison Finck each delivered RBI hits.
The 1-0 Eagles will play at Napa on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Finck will get the start on the mound.
