By Ray Hamill — Postseason action continues on Saturday for the local high school teams in baseball and softball.

Four more H-DNL teams will play their quarterfinals, with all four hosting their games.

In softball, the Eureka girls will finally get their playoff campaign under way, eight days after clinching this year’s Charles Lakin Tournament championship.

The Loggers, who had a first-round bye, are the top seeds in the Division-5 bracket and will play San Domenico at Washington Field in Eureka.

Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Also in Division-5 softball action, No. 4 South Fork will host Moreau Catholic in Miranda, as the Cubs look to make it two playoff wins in four days.

That game is also set for 1 p.m.

The Eureka girls are enjoying an impressive turnaround season after going winless in 2025 and will be hoping for a first NCS playoff win since 2023.

Head coach Bob Secor and his players are 12-12 on the season and carry a three-game winning streak into Saturday’s big showdown.

San Domenico, meanwhile, is seeded  No. 8 in the bracket.

The Panthers are 16-4 on the season and won a one-run, high-scoring game against Hoopa in their playoff opener earlier in the week, 11-10.

They are also one of the hottest teams in the NCS.

The Panthers have won 13 straight games and have not suffered defeat since March 20.

The South Fork girls, meanwhile, comfortably took care of business in their playoff opener, defeating Kennedy 10-3 and improving to 16-9 on the season.

But they can expect a tougher challenge against the No. 5 seeded Mariners, who make the trip from Hayward.

The Moreau Catholic girls are 13-12 on the season, but have impressed down the stretch of the season.

The Mariners, who defeated Hercules 14-0 in their NCS opener on Wednesday, have won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12.

Even more impressively, they have not given up a run since April and have recorded five straight shutouts.

In that run they have outscored their opponents 75-0.

In baseball, meanwhile, just two H-DNL teams remain in contention for a Section championship.

And both will play on Saturday.

St. Bernard’s is the top seed in Division 4 and had an opening-round bye.

The Little 4 champs are 21-4, but are coming off back-to-back losses, against McKinleyville in a non-conference game and against Eureka in the semifinals of last week’s Charles Lakin Tournament.

Head coach Matt Tomlin, however, should have his players ready to go on Saturday, when Pinole Valley travels to Eureka.

The Spartans are 14-11 and have been streaky this spring.

The No. 9 seeds in the bracket defeated Arroyo 9-0 in their playoff opener on Wednesday to stretch their winning streak to six straight games, including four games where they allowed two or less runs.

However, the Spartans lost five straight before that and have previously posted winning and losing streaks of four straight games.

Saturday’s Division-4 quarterfinal is set for 2 p.m. at Crusader Field.

Rounding out a busy Saturday for the HDN teams, the McKinleyville boys will try to keep rolling in the Division-2 quarterfinals.

The Panthers are seeded No. 1 in the bracket and edged No. 16 California 2-1 in Wednesday’s playoff opener.

On Saturday afternoon they will host No. 8 Bishop O’Dowd at McKinleyville High, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

As the most complete team here on the North Coast, the Panthers have impressed all spring long and have lost just twice this season on the way to a 24-2 win.

The Big 5 and Lakin tournament champs have also been clutch down the stretch, winning seven straight games since losing to Eureka in late April.

And they have been playing well in all aspects of the game, with strong pitching, offense and team defense.

During their recent seven-game winning streak, head coach Mike Dobrec’s team has allowed more than two runs just once.

The Dragons, meanwhile, have been hit or miss recently with a 3-3 record in May.

They also have been somewhat streaky this spring, posting winning streaks of eight and six games, with a losing streak of five sandwiched in between.

Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m.
