First-place finishes by Ferndale’s Anthony Kasso and St. Bernard’s Kolton Hall were the highlight performances of the day for the Little 4 schools at the weekend North Coast Section Class A track and field championships.
The best small school athletes in the area traveled to Montgomery High in Santa Rosa for the postseason meet with several turning in strong performances and numerous setting PRs.
Kasso and Hall led the way as the league claimed six top-three spots.
Kasso was first across the line in the 110 meter hurdles, setting a PR with a time of 15.42 seconds and edging Fort Bragg’s Dakoda Thompson for the win by just three-tenths of a second.
Hall led an outstanding day for the Little 4 schools in the boys discus, with five conference athletes placing in the top nine.
The St. Bernard’s senior set a PR on his way to the victory, winning with a throw of 146’ 5”.
His teammate Asher Floyd placed third, followed by Hoopa’s Quincy McDonald in sixth and Ferndale teammates Ethan Weitzel and Rigel Hahner in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Weitzel (121’ 4”) and Hahner (120’ 2”) both set PRs.
Hall rounded out a good individual day with a third-place finish in the shot put, followed by teammate Teqkauri Achane in sixth.
As a team, the St. Bernard’s boys placed seventh overall.
Kasso also impressed in the triple jump, placing fourth with a PR of 39’ 1.5”.

Other top-10 finishes for the H-DNL boys included St. Bernard’s Alex Carter, who placed sixth in the 100m (11.1 seconds) and seventh in the 200m (22.79 seconds) and set PRs in both, as well as the SB 4x100m relay team of Hall, Carter, Maddox Boham and Jack Omey, which finished sixth, one spot ahead of Ferndale’s Kasso, Hahner, Garyn McClurg and Rolland McClurg.
Hoopa’s William Simms Jr., Carter Kang, Travis Trundle and Jesse Roberts placed ninth in the 4x400m relay, while their teammate Daniel Peralta placed eighth in the long jump, two spots ahead of St. Bernard’s Noah Porambo.
And rounding out the top-10 finishes on the day for the Little 4 boys, Ferndale’s Brandon Bailey finished ninth in the triple jump.
In the girls competition, meanwhile, St. Bernard’s junior Scarlett Zerlang impressed with three top-eight finishes, including a second place in the discus with a throw of 92’ 2”.
Zerlang also placed sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the shot put.
One of the highlights of the day for the L4 schools was the SB 4x100m girls relay team.
The speedy Sahara Tupua, Alyssa Boham, Paula Bullock and Lulu Vainuku finished second, just three-tenths of a second behind the winning foursome from International.
Boham also set a PR on her way to finishing fourth in the 100m with a time of 12.77 seconds, with Vainuku, a freshman, placing eighth with a PR of 12.88 seconds.
Vainuku rounded out a good day by also placing eighth in the 200m with another PR of 26.78 seconds, which was just three-hundredths of a second faster than Boham in ninth, while their teammate Princesa Gutierrez impressed on her way to a sixth-place finish in the girls discus with a PR of 83’ 11”.
As a team, the SB girls placed 10th.
