League athletes building momentum ahead of stretch run

The Eureka Loggers continue to set the pace in H-DNL boys track and field this week, posting a third league win in three league meets.

The HDN athletes traveled to Del Norte on Wednesday and the Loggers placed first in five of the 16 events on the way to scoring 143 points for a comfortable team win.

Arcata placed a distant second with 104 points, followed by DelNorte (91), Fortuna (79.5) and St. Bernard’s (46).

Once again the Eureka boys dominated the jumps, placing first in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Senior Rohan Hang led a strong showing for the team in the high jump, placing first in the event, followed by teammates Xavier De La Rosa in second and Bo Landry in third.

Landry took first in the long jump, followed by De La Rosa in second and Arcata’s Jaxon Lewis in third, while De La Rosa won the triple jump, followed by Del Norte’s Nicholas Rodriguez in second and Fortuna’s Robert Csaszsar-Ryan in third.

Fortuna senior Kavi Bolden continued his very impressive spring on the track with another strong showing and placed first in three different events for the third straight league meet.

The Huskies speedster won the 200 meters with a PR time of 22.07 seconds, followed by Del Norte’s Landon Balent in second and Alex Carter of St. Bernard’s in third.

Carter’s time of 22.94 seconds broke his own school record, which he set at Fortuna the previous week.

Carter is also closing in on the Crusaders’ 100m record after recording a PR time of 11.24 seconds on his way to placing first on Wednesday.

Eureka’s Luis Garcia Anderson finished second, followed by teammate Isaiah Pannell-Herbst in third.

Bolden’s other two wins on the day came in the relay events.

He teamed with Tiki Bolden, Jack Stacy and Mako Limon in the 4x100m as Fortuna edged Eureka by just two-tenths of a second, and  teamed with Limon, Tyren Sanborn and Humberto Florez-Lopez to win the 4x400m.

Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg continued to set a blistering pace in both throwing events, placing first in the shot put and discus for the third straight league meet.

Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza placed second in both throwing events, with St. Bernard’s Kohlton Hall third in the shot put and Eureka’s Jackson Herbert third in the discus.

It was also a good day for Ferndale senior Anthony Kasso, who won the 110m hurdles, followed by Eureka’s Thomas Hoffman in second and Miles Hayhurst-John in third, the latter of whom is enjoying an impressive freshman season.

The young Loggers standout would also set a PR on his way to victory in the 300m hurdles, winning in a time of 44.58 seconds, with Del Norte’s Bryce Stover in second and Eureka’s Garcia-Anderson in third.

Balent, meanwhile, placed first for Del Norte in the 400m, followed by teammate Garcia-Levy in second and Hoopa’s Daniel Peralta in third, while Eureka’s Sean Morris took the victory in a fast 800m that saw the top six runners all post PRS.

Morris crossed the finish line in a time of 2 minutes, 3.34 seconds, followed by Arcata teammates Ocean Walker and Evan Poston in second and third, respectively, while Walker fared one better in the 1600m, winning with a PR time of 4:37.30.

Poston placed second in that event followed by Eureka’s Ryder Bullman in third.

The boys 3200m was won by Fortuna’s Juan Ornelas, followed by Arcata’s Sebastian Amaro and Micah Cristian in second and third, while Del Norte standout Jason Murphy continued to dominate the pole vault with his third victory in three league meets this spring.

His teammate Thomas Cochran finished second, followed by Arcata’s Cristian in third.

The final league meet of the regular season will take place at McKinleyville on Wednesday.
