Del Norte girls take team victory in league track and field meet

The host Del Norte Warriors placed first in five of the 16 events at this week’s H-DNL track and field meet in Crescent City on the way to taking the team victory.

After placing second in each of the first two league meets of the spring, the Del Norte girls scored 143 points on Wednesday to comfortably beat second-placed Eureka by 33 points.

The Loggers, who took seven first places, scored 110 points, followed by Arcata (83.5), Fortuna (67.5) and McKinleyville (45).

Eureka junior Elizebeth Rominger continued to set the pace in the sprints, setting PRs on the way to victory in both the 100 and 200 meter races.

Rominger won the 100m in a time of 12.74 seconds, with St. Bernard’s teammates Alyssa Boham and Lulu Vainuku finishing second and third, respectively.

The Eureka speedster won the 200m in a time of 25.98, followed by Fortuna’s Madison Ruiz in second and Eureka’s Grecia Ortiz in third.

Rominger also helped lead the Loggers to victory in the 4x100m relay, along with teammates Aurora Copeland, Evelyn Ladika and Ortiz.

Eureka’s Natalie Wyllie was also a double winner on the day, placing first in both hurdles races.

The sophomore standout has now placed first in all six league hurdles races this spring and set a new PR on her way to victory in the 300m hurdles on Wednesday, crossing the finish line in a time of 50.92 seconds.

The top seven finishers in that race all set new PRs, with Del Norte’s Annabelle White finishing second and Fortuna freshman Tayla Fontaine in third.

McKinleyville’s Leona Sobehrad placed second in the girls 100m hurdles, followed by Eureka’s Epona Siggins in third.

Del Norte senior Kansas Coulson continued to impress in the pole vault, which she won for the second straight week, followed by teammate Arriana Pennington in second. Del Norte’s Alexandra Eckart and Fortuna’s Jasmine Holt tied for third.

Coulson also teamed with Savanah Amore, Annika Starling and Zakayla Robinson to place first in the 4x400m relay.

Other winners for Del Norte included Melody Brennan in the discus, which she won for the third straight week, Jeana Erler in the high jump and White in the triple jump.

Arcata’s Syriah George placed second in the discus, followed by Del Norte’s Aurora Mitchell in third, while White finished second in the high jump, ahead of Fortuna freshman Kaleya Parkinson and McKinleyville’s Lili Loomis, who tied for third.

St. Bernard’s Scarlett Zerlang finished second to White in the triple jump, followed by Eureka’s Zoey Bachman in third.

Arcata senior Anna McLaughlin, meanwhile, continued to dominate the girls long jump, which she won for the third straight week, followed by Del Norte’s Lucy Garcia in second and Zerlang in third, while McLaughlin’s teammate Melanie Jackson placed first in the shot put, followed by Eureka’s Sosie Behler and Del Norte’s Mitchell in second and third, respectively.

   

Fortuna’s Ruiz also impressed on her way to victory in the 400m, followed by Del Norte’s Robinson in second and Arcata’s Zelia Stoll in third, while Eureka’s Iris Bartlett won the 800m with a PR time of 2 minutes 38 seconds, followed by Fortuna’s Brida Lester in second and McKinleyville’s Lydia Davis in third.

Rounding out the individual winners on the day, Eureka’s Claire Gast was first across the finish line the 1600m, followed by Arcata’s Zoe Cappuccio in second and Lester in third, and McKinleyville sophomore Amara Som got her first-ever league win the 3200m with a PR of 13:41.66, followed by Arcata’s Vivian Adams in second and Eureka’s Rathlin Hemmingsen in third.

The fourth and final HDN meet of the regular season will take place at McKinleyville this coming Wednesday.
