The Hoopa Warriors wrapped up their pre-league schedule in baseball with a dominating performance at Trinity on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hoopa boys bounced back from a challenging trip to the Fort Bragg tournament over the weekend with an 18-1 win on four innings.

And the Hoopa bats came out swinging, as six different Warriors combined for 11 hits, including four with multiple hits.

“It was good to get back to playing ball,” Hoopa head coach Boyd Ferris said. “We had some tough outings at Fort Bragg, so it was good to get these guys back hitting the ball.”

With the win, the Warriors improved to 4-3 on the season, as they get set for the Little 4, which should be competitive this year.

Several key players have been impressing for Hoopa, including senior team leaders Allen Kane and Brian Richards, each of whom had big days at Trinity.

Kane has established himself as the team ace on the hill and also has been hitting the ball hard.

He pitched all four innings on Tuesday, holding the Trinity bats to just three hits and striking out eight.

“Allen had good command throughout the day,” Ferris said. “He kept the ball in the zone.”

Kane also finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a walk and three RBIs, and for the season he has six doubles, as well as a three-run home run in a weekend loss to South Fork at the Fort Bragg tournament.

Richards finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and has been a solid No. 2 option on the hill early in his senior campaign.

Sonny White was a late addition to this year’s team but has settled in quickly and he also had a good day at the plate against Trinity.

White was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and also reached on a hit-by-pitch.

“It’s been good to see him hit the ball,” Ferris said.

Delmer Ferris also has impressed early in the new season and went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBIs against the Wolves, while Barret Myers was 1-for-3 with a walk and Kaydon Matilton was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

“For the most part we played good baseball,” the coach said.

In addition to Kane and Richards, both Myers and White are also expected to see plenty of time on the mound when conference play begins, giving their coach four solid options.

Among the younger players, Matilton has been doing a good job at second base for the team, while sophomore Owen Smith is filling an important utility role and playing multiple positions as needed, impressing at shortstop and in the outfield, as well as on the mound.

Torin Billings is another sophomore who has been playing a key role for the team, while a group of  freshmen are quickly adapting to the demands of the high school game.

“Ou freshmen are getting some good reps,” Boyd Ferris said. “They’re coming to practice every day and putting the work in.”
