Both Humboldt Eagles American Legion baseball teams were in action this week, as they get set for a busy weekend.

The Eagles 19Us beat Breakout Baseball on Tuesday and took two games from the Tehama Bulls on Wednesday, while the club’s 17Us split a doubleheader against the Southern Humboldt 76ers on Tuesday.

The 19Us took game one of their doubleheader against the Bulls 4-1 and completed the sweep with an 11-3 win in game two.

Lyle McKinnon got the start on the mound in game one and dominated on his way to a complete-game victory.

The Hoopa Warrior gave up just two hits and a walk and struck out seven.

With a shortage of pitchers available for the week, the Eagles needed a big performance from McKinnon and he delivered.

Matt Pleasant, who was called up from the 17U squad to help fill in, answered the call and had a big game at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.

Michael Manzi also was 2-for-3 and played some strong defense at shortstop.

Scotty Brogan was also called up from the 17U team and got the start on the mound in game two, throwing 2.1 strong innings while on a pitch count to save him for this weekend’s Reno tournament.

Joseph Forbes-Cappiello pitched the remainder of the game and gave up just one run on two hits.

Forbes-Cappiello also had a big game at the plate and finished with three hits, as did Manzi and Alex Jimenez.

The Eagles 19Us also played a single nine-inning game against Breakout Baseball on Tuesday and won 6-5.

In a back-and-forth game, the Eagles scored the winning run in the top of the ninth and held on.

With McKinnon on base, Forbes-Capiello advanced him on a sac bunt, before Cooper Ohlsen came in to pinch hit and drove him home for what would be the winning run.

According to head coach Tommy Gale, “it was definitely a team win,” with several players stepping up.

Finn Warner and Garrett Levitt each had two hits in the win, including a double by Levitt, while Jimenez and Brogan each also had a double.

Aidan Rice and Matt Pleasant each also had a hit.

Jimenez pitched 5.1 strong innings for a no-decision, giving up just two hits and four walks and striking out three.

Levitt got the win in relief, allowing three hits and one walk in 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out five.

Eagles 17Us

On Tuesday, the Eagles 17Us split an exciting doubleheader of one-run games against the Southern Humboldt 76ers to go to 3-1 on the season.

The Eagles took game one 8-7 before dropping game two 10-9.

Ryder Mitchell provide the offensive highlight of game one, hitting a walk-off double, and finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Brayden Bermers got the win on the mound in relief of starter Kyle Giacone, throwing four strong innings and striking out  two.

Giacone pitched three innings and struck out five.

Mitchell continued to have the hot bat in game two and finished 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Giacone also impressed at the plate and was 3-for-3.

Mitchell also took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up five hits with three strikeouts.

“Ultimately, I’m really happy with how this team has started,” Eagles head coach John Downey said.

A busy part of the schedule continues for both Eagles teams this weekend, with the 19Us playing a pair of doubleheaders and the 17Us playing at the Reno tournament.

The 19Us play Willits at Mendocino College on Saturday, before returning home to host Sonoma County Legion on Sunday.

  1. Remember back when we all had to open the paper to read about the game . Alit of times there was no story but there was the box score. That would be a kook addition. To the write up if the coaches could send a screen shot of the game stat line . H ,BB, rbi ,runs , sb, ip, k , w, L, sv, . I always liked looking over the stat line when I was a kid , would be nice to see that again.
