The Eel River A’s capped a perfect spring on the local baseball fields with another dominating win in the district Junior League Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
The A’s got the better of the Southern Humboldt Giants 14-4 in the championship game at Belotti Field in Eureka and closed out a very impressive campaign 13-0.
And they dominated in all facets of the game, scoring around 13 runs a game and giving up just three or four a game, according to head coach Trevor Maniaci.
They carried that dominant form into the postseason tournament.
After receiving an opening-round bye in the seven-team tournament, they opened with a 17-5 win over the Eel River Giants to reach the final.
And remarkably, the won the title without three of their best players — Maysen Towne Fausone, Bryson Maniaci and Dominic Lanza — who were all missing for the tournament because of injuries after each of them hit over .700 during the regular season.
But several players stepped up in their absence, including Ryder Sweaney, who filled in at catcher, and Grady Crosswhite.
“(They) stepped up to fill the void and did so phenomenally,” Trevor Maniaci said. of Sweaney and Crosswhite.
So too did Carson “Chowder” McGinnis, who pitched four strong innings on the mound and held the Giants offense scoreless until late in the deciding game as the A’s opened up a 14-0 lead.
McGinnis switched to first base for the final inning and played a part in a game-ending 4-6-3 double play, along with Chance Varela and Crosswhite.
It was an appropriate way to end the game and the season for a team that had no real weaknesses.

“I like how aggressive we were on offense, especially,” Trevor Maniaci said. “And how disciplined we were on defense. And our pitching was outstanding, and we had our bats going every single game.”
All 13 players on the roster made big contributions, from game one back in early April all the way through the postseason tournament.
“From top to bottom of the lineup, we got hits all the way through,” the head coach added. “It was really cool to see all of them come through and be able to do that.”
Scott Oldham had a big day in the championship game, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate and pitching the final inning to help seal the win.
Wyatt Shaw also impressed, adding a two-out bases-clearing triple to help set the tone and get his teammates going early on.
Cameron Hilldebrandt, Isaiah Hoaglen, Gunner Johnson and Ozzie Smith rounded out the 13-player roster and each also played key roles on the path to success.
With the team’s season now over, several of the players will turn their attention to the district all-star tournament, which gets under way in Fortuna this weekend.
Bryson Maniaci, McGinnis, Oldham and Heldebrandt all have been chosen for the Eel River all-star squad.
Mark Williams was an assistant coach with the A’s this spring.
