Arcata’s Collenberg gains valuable experience at CIF state meet

Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg was the lone H-DNL representative at the weekend state championships in track and field in Clovis, as the local season came to an end.

The junior standout and school record holder capped an outstanding year in sports by qualifying for the prestigious meet in the shot put.

And while Collenberg fouled all three of his attempts, the experience of competing at such a high profile event will no doubt stand to him in the future.

Only four juniors in the entire state made it to the final day of competition.

Regardless, it was a memorable season for Collenberg, who broke a 50-year school record in the event, and did so twice.

He won the league title in the shot put by some distance and would go on to place third at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions to qualify for the state meet.

He smashed his previous PR and school record by more than two and a half feet at the MOC with a throw of 55’ 6.25”.

This followed a big season for the Arcata junior in both football and wrestling.

He played a key role in leading the Tigers to a first-ever state championship in football in the fall and also won a league championship in wrestling during the winter season.

Collenberg will continue his preparation for next year later this month.

He will compete at the Nike Outdoors Nationals in the Emerging Elite division.

That big meet will take place at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
