By Ray Hamill — The Fortuna Huskies did not play on Saturday but they received some good news.
A 41-14 win at Eureka on Friday night lifted Fortuna to 2-0 in the Pacific League, and a tough loss for Del Norte at St. Bernard’s on Saturday afternoon means the Huskies are now guaranteed at least a share of this year’s league championship.
The league title is the program’s third in four years, after they shared it with St. Bernard’s a year ago and with both SB and Del Norte in 2023.
The Huskies have been one of the hottest teams in the area all season and have lost just once — to Ukiah in week three — on the way to a 7-1 overall record.
Since that loss to the Wildcats, head coach Mike Benbow and his players have won five straight games, including league wins over St. Bernard’s and Eureka.
They can clinch the title outright with a victory over Del Norte on the final weekend of the regular season in two weeks.
However, if they lose that game we could see a three-way tie for the championship.
Both Del Norte and St. Bernard’s are 1-1 in league play and remain in contention, with only Eureka (0-2) eliminated from the race going into the final round of league games.
There will be a break in league play next weekend, as the Huskies get set for one of their biggest games of the year.
Fortuna will make the short trip to Ferndale to play the Wildcats, who are also 7-1, in the annual Milk Can game on Saturday afternoon.
