The top two teams in this year’s Little 4 bowed out of the North Coast Section softball playoffs on Saturday.

Barely.

It took extra innings to separate Hoopa and St. Vincent de Paul in Division-6 action in Petaluma, with the home team securing a 3-2 walk-off victory in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In Division 5, Little 4 champs South Fork fell 7-2 to Miramonte, a school with almost five times the student population.

“I am proud of all the accomplishments we had this year,”South Fork head coach Lisa Todd said. “Today was a hard loss, but when you’re up against a school of 1,100 I think we did pretty good.”

Saturday’s two losses means the McKinleyville Panthers are the last remaining H-DNL team still alive in the NCS softball playoffs.

The Panthers, who are seeded No. 1 in the Division-5 tournament, will host Miramonte in semifinal action on Wednesday.

Miramonte broke a 1-1 tie in Saturday’s game with three runs in the second inning.

The Matadors scored runs in each of the first four innings.

“We played well,” Todd said. “We struggled at the plate a little bit. Defensively we did good. Miramonte hit well and ran the bases hard.”

Freshman Leila Coleman capped a very good debut season in high school with another good performance in the loss.

She finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and also struck out eight and walked just two in the circle.

Hailey Shepherd and Calleigh Smith each also made some noise at the plate for South Fork and both players finished 1-for-3 with a double, with Shepherd also scoring a run.

Mackenzie Coleman added a base hit and scored a run, while Kendall Kercher had a base hit and Molly Perkins had a walk.

The Cubs finished the season 18-7 and won a Little 4 championship for the first time in 35 years.

“The girls had a great season,” Todd said.

So too did the Hoopa Warriors, who overcame a nine-game losing streak at the start of the season with a strong finish that saw them win nine of 13 games heading into Saturday’s section quarterfinal.

They opened the scoring with a run in the top of the fourth inning and doubled their advantage with a second run in the fifth.

However, the Mustangs would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to force the extra innings.

The St. Vincent de Paul girls out-hit the Warriors 8-3.

With the loss, the Warriors closed out the season 10-17.

The McKinleyville Panthers are the last remaining H-DNL team in this year’s NCS softball playoffs.
