Just a few months after helping to lead the Arcata Tigers to an historic first-ever state championship in football, junior Skyler Collenberg will compete for another state title this week.
On Saturday, the Tigers standout placed third in the shot put at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions in Dublin to qualify for this week’s prestigious meet.
And he did so with a very impressive record-setting performance.
Collenberg smashed his own school record in the event by more than two and a half feet, throwing 55’ 6.25”.
His previous best mark was 53’.
The state championships will take place in Clovis, with the action getting under way on Friday.
Several other local athletes also made the trip to Dublin this past weekend.
Del Norte’s Deken Hanks, who had beaten his own league record in the 100 meters in each of the previous two weekends, placed eighth at the MOC, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.02 seconds.
Hanks’ league record time is 10.57 seconds.
“It was a great year, the kind of year you want any athlete to have,” Del Norte head coach Taylor Duncan said of Hanks. “Obviously there were some high highs and some things to work on, but I couldn’t be more proud of Deken. It was a great year of growth.”
Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza also competed in the shot put and placed 10th with a throw of 46’ 8”, giving the H-DNL two top-10 finishers in the event.
